So it's been a hard slog the last few days at Littleton Farm. The wet weather has not helped and ground water is very high.
Multiple trees taken down and logged. The old ponds have been de-silted. Shaping, grading and clay lining now in progress. It looks like a scene from the Somme at the moment but it will be worth it once nature takes hold again 🤞
Can't thank enough, all those who are helping. Brother and sister in law, (Bill and Lynn), our good friend Simon, Mick (our local delivery man, a man of many talents!) plus the grandparents Norm and Cathy
We've never really been able to show the whole site at Littleton Farm Barns since we started rewilding the 11 acres of land. However we had some new photos taken for the website yesterday which included a virtual 3D tour of the Owl Barn and a video tour of the site . We hope these give you a better idea of the site, what we are doing and what we have done.
We hope you enjoy the video and if you want to walk around the Owl Barn, then click on the link below!

Day one of our pond renovations at Littleton Farm Barns . I hate taking trees down, however the ponds are totally choked, the trees are disease ridden and they've got to be removed. Jenny is dumper driving, I'm chainsawing and our good friend Simon is on the 13 ton digger
Well Littleton Farm Barns duck population is exploding..From 10 baby ducklings yesterday to 13 this morning.... 🤣
More new arrivals at Littleton Farm Barns today!! One of our mumma ducks has just turned up with 10 ducklings ❤️🤗
Love everything nature at Littleton Farm Barns 😁
So our baby kestrels are now nearly fully grown! There down has nearly gone and their adult feathers are just about fully developed. The oldest chick has already been off on training flights with mum, and chick two will follow soon. Mum will stay with them for the next month, teaching them flying and hunting techniques.
It's been a wonderful journey watching them grow into the magnificent birds they are..
So it's amazing the difference a day makes. Just 24 hours after my last post Mrs Kes's first born is starting to mature rapidly. More primary flight feathers have grown and he/she (not sure yet) is flexing its wings and leg strengthening by running around the nest box. Chick two, is face planted and sleeping 🤣
Our kestrel chicks at Littleton Farm Barns are now as big as mum and their primary flight feathers are coming through.
Mum is having to work extremely hard now as she is having to feed her chicks and herself several times a day. So much so, that she rarely takes time to rest.
The chicks should fledge in about 2 weeks and i hope she can keep up the pace.
Total respect to all the single mums out there, whatever the species!!
Total respect to Mrs Kes. I knew it would be hard work for her raising her chicks on her own, but she's managing it. The chicks are growing fast, which means she's having to hunt more often. She's now hunting as soon as it's light, and this is her feeding her young at 5 oclock this morning..
Mrs Kes. Working hard to feed her chicks this morning. Hard work for a single mum!
If you enjoy your nature, then come and stay with us at Littleton Farm Barns and you too can enjoy the nature around us 🤗

We've had nest box camera issues at Littleton Farm Barns, so unfortunately the footage of Mrs Kes and her two chicks has been sporadic. There's been no sign of the male so we dont know if he has abandoned her or died. Mrs Kes is having to leave her chicks (which is risky) and work twice as hard to feed her babies, but shes doing well.
Shes a great mum and hopefully will successfully raise both chicks 🤞
Best played without sound due to faulty microphone!
So our nesting Kestrels have their first chick! Mum is working hard feeding her little one, but we haven't seen much of dad. Getting worried he's not necessarily the best partner.(Probably down the pub again 🙄)
Unfortunately, out of the 5 eggs laid, two eggs were lost to predation, but we're hopeful the other two eggs will hatch soon.
Very pleased to announce that our breeding pair of kestrels are now sitting on a clutch of 5 eggs. The male and female will share the egg sitting, although the female will do most of the work (no change their, eh ladies 😏).
We hope to bring you updated video when the eggs have hatched, which will be some point in early June...
Did you know...........❓
Kestrels are diurnal hunters (which means that they hunt in the day). They reach sexual maturity at about 1 year of age. They have an elaborate courtship involving synchronized flying and food gifts, a pair of kestrels will mate and usually pair bond for life.
The female will lay 4-5 eggs in a clutch and these eggs will hatch after 26-30 days of incubation.
There are believed to be 31000 breeding pairs in the UK although their numbers are still in decline.
Love "everything nature" at Littletonfarm barns 🤗
Some lovely footage of a male and female owl barn visiting our new Owl box last night. The female was brought a juicy vole by the male and she ate dinner whilst he patiently stood by. Who said romance is dead! 🤣
Nesting season is anytime between March and August and I'm hoping they feel confident enough to use the nest box to breed.
Passionate about nature at Littleton farm barns.... 🤗
I know I post a lot about the wildlife at Littleton Farm Barns, however I'm really chuffed . We put up another Owl Box today due to competition for the other box between resident kestrels and owls. Didn't expect any new visitors for a few weeks, so was really surprised to receive a camera alert in the new box as as soon as it got dark!
Hello beautiful!!!!!!
Our male kestrel at Littleton Farm Barns is proving to be a dutiful partner taking a freshly caught chick into the nest box for his lady love today....Kestrels are specialists in hunting voles, but they are great opportunists to and will take young birds, as this video shows..
