September is well and truly underway so it's time to explore our walk of the month 👣

This short, easy, walk provides excellent views across the Cleveland plain, with the incredible Captain Cook Monument rising in the distance. The circular 3-mile walk makes the best of the sweeping views while also offering a shady route through Greenhow Plantation.

It has been categoriosed as Miles without Stiles - For some. There are no steps or stiles on the walk, but there are some steep gradients and the surface can get muddy in wet weather. The route follows forest tracks through the woodland.

Find out more and explore Clay Bank during September 👉 https://www.northyorkmoors.org.uk/things-to-do/walking/our-walks/activity-details?id=56904620

The Carthusian diet was characterised by its strict adherence to monastic principles of solitude and simplicity.

Monks only ate together on Sundays and feast days, while on other days, their food was delivered through a hatch in their cell walls by a lay brother, allowing them to collect their meals without direct contact.

Their diet was predominantly composed of fish, pulses, and eggs, as they abstained from eating meat. 🐟🥚

They also grew vegetables in their gardens and were provided with bread and beer. 🌱🍞🍺

Regular fasting was a part of their regime, and they drank fresh spring water that was piped directly to taps in each cell.

Archaeological finds, such as seal bone, suggest that their diet included a variety of food sources. 🦭

How crazy we have two months left of our 30th season in the tearooms, it feels like yesterday we made the decision to reopen this year, after four crazy years of being closed. It’s been a whirlwind and a positive whirlwind at that! Seeing familiar faces and new, our closing date will be Sunday 3rd November. Until then please still support us Thursday to Sunday 10-4pm.
Over winter we will be revamping, discussing and planning for the future, maybe even a little rest bite…
Crazy to think 30 years of our family running the tearooms, still with the same ethos as when mum opened the doors, good quality home baking and adapting to the ever changing world of hospitality
Next year marks the 54th year of the abbey being in our family also… a lot has happened during that time.

September light ☀️

Autumn is in the air and provides the perfect opportunity to visit our Tony Cragg exhibition and view the sculptures as the seasons begin to change.

We have really enjoyed seeing families engage with the sculptures. If you're visiting with little ones make sure to pick up a Mini Artist Handbook at the Ticket Office. We're also extending our Stately Sculpting sessions to this weekend and next, a great way to get creative and make your own sculpted masterpiece inspired by Tony Cragg.

Tony Cragg at Castle Howard runs until 22 September and features over 20 sculptures in the House and Gardens.

Supported by Thaddaeus Ropac
