About Thirsk
Thirsk is a traditional North Yorkshire Market town positioned midway between the stunning North York Moors and the beautiful Yorkshire Dales, right in the midst of Herriot country for those James Herriot fans. In the famous James Herriot stories created by the writer Alf Wight, Thirsk is the fictional 'Darrowby', a central location in the tales featuring the activities of a Yorkshire vet. The World of James Herriot Museum in Thirsk occupies the original surgery of Alf Wight who lived in Thirsk for more than fifty years. Thirsk is very pet friendly. There are plenty of walks that start directly from Nana Duck’s cottage, following the river or through fields and pathways you can go further afield, enjoying the breath-taking Yorkshire countryside, including the Hambleton Hills with their many footpaths and cycleways. Just two minutes away from Nana Duck’s cottage you will find the cobbled market square in the centre of Thirsk where you can enjoy the interesting pubs, buildings and houses many dating back to the eighteenth century, when Thirsk was an important posting station. Thirsk's oldest inns include the Three Tuns dating back to 1698 and The Golden Fleece that is thought to date back to Tudor times. There are also a number of museums, galleries and the world-renowned James Herriot Centre is literally round the corner - a must see for fans of All Creatures Great and Small. Thirsk also has plenty of traditional shops, cafes and tearooms to choose from and even its own racecourse if you fancy a fun filled day out. There really is something for everyone and the best thing is, its all year round! Thirsk is the principal market town of the Hambleton Hills, forming the western part of the moors and is a haven for keen walkers and cyclists with numerous pathways and cycle tracks close by. It is an excellent base for touring the whole of the Yorkshire Dales National Park as well as the North Yorkshire Moors and the stunning coastline, which is easily reached within an hours drive across stunning scenery. The historic medieval city of York is just ½ hour away and well worth a visit, as are Harrogate, Ripon, Northallerton, Knaresborough and Richmond - all stunning and crammed full of lovely independent shops, cafes and bistros. The famous White Horse of Kilburn and the incredible views of Lake Gormire from Sutton Bank is just 4 miles away. There is an amazing pet shop in Thirsk, literally just round the corner from Nana Duck’s Cottage. If you are staying at our cottage with your furry friends, please do pop round to Moose&Me - Natural Pet shop and browse their fantastic selection!!
We will soon be leaving little goody bags for our guests with woofs (or other animals!), so watch this space for a taster of what your lovely dog or cat or other furry family member might receive!!

We have had the saddest week here at Nana Duck HQ. Our best friend and most amazing boy, Herb, passed away on Sunday 22/12/24. Our hearts are broken. The most incredible, loving and loyal boy in the world.
Rest easy Herb. You will always be in our hearts and minds. We cannot believe you’ve gone so soon.
We love you so much.

Poor Herb, our amazing Pointer/Lab cross has been really poorly this week with pancreatitis. It was touch and go as to whether he would get through it.
He has been in hospital with the incredible team at Skeldale Veterinary Hospital Medivet 24 Hour Thirsk and we cannot thank them enough for saving his life.
Luckily he is back home with us now thanks to their fantastic care. We couldn’t have imagined Christmas without him.

We have been enjoying what hopefully isn’t the last of the sunshine at the amazing Five House cafe and farm shop near Crathorne, which is just down the road from Thirsk!
Highly recommend our guests take a run out to Five Houses or to its sister business, Kitsons butchers in Northallerton!

Gosh we have had some serious rain up here in North Yorkshire in recent weeks!!! So much water comes down from the hills that it makes the river really swell, often to scary heights here at Nana Duck’s Cottage!
We are so grateful for our housekeeping team and friends, Lindsay, Jon and Chloe plus our family friend Barrie and our amazing neighbours for keeping us up to date, popping round to check the height and flow and letting us know how things are looking!
We seem to spend hours on the Flood alert app watching the river heights which is a really accurate way of telling if the river is getting dangerously high!
When mum was alive, her beautiful cottage flooded three times, once really badly, so we are always on the watch out for the tell tale signs from those years!
Having a cottage on a river side can be just stunning, but also quite scary!!
Thank you to our friends and neighbours for helping to keep our cottage safe!!!

It’s World Mental Health Awareness Day today and what could be better for your mental well-being than a lovely stroll just as the leaves are starting to tumble down, conkers are growing on trees and a slight chill is in the air - a sure sign that autumn is around the corner.

Don’t worry he soon dried off in the autumn sunshine with his little drying coat on! He was too embarrassed for a photo with that on though!

UPDATE!!! Thanks so much to Trev and our neighbour Janice for their video and photo updates! The river has now receded from the road and is going back down the grass to where it belongs! Fingers crossed for no more rain and melting snow on the hills! Thanks all!
Well it’s been a pretty worrying few days for us here at Nana Duck headquarters as we anxiously watched the flood alerts and graphs for Cod Beck which usually runs about fifty metres away along the front of the cottage at a relatively steady speed!
One of the challenges for us is that we don’t live locally to my late mum’s cottage and with Lockdown we can’t even get there!!!! So, in the midst of the rising river we want to express our Massive thanks to Trev and Sarah, who look after Nana Duck’s for us for popping round frequently to check the river levels which kept rising last nights we anxiously watched the graphs and waited fkr the emergency phone call!
As we watched the graphs rising, worry was hitting an all time high, but thankfully neighbours were regularly in touch. In the middle of the night, the worst happened and the river broke its banks, rising fast towards the cottages!
We are so very thankful to our amazing neighbours who immediately sprung to action saving the day with emergency phone calls to the council who brought sand bags. The incredible neighbours then braved the cold, rain and snow to secure the courtyard and prevent our sottages being flooded! Thank you Marion, Wendy, Janice, Rosie and everyone else for your incredible actions! Here’s hoping the river is going back down from the pavement and the rain stops!
In the photos you can see how the river has spread all the way across the grass area (where the trees are!) and onto the road! Terrifying! We are eternally grateful to our friends and neighbours in Thirsk for saving Nana Duck’s from flooding! Thank you!!!!

After a turbulent few months, Neil and I are delighted to have been able to purchase my late mum's gorgeous cottage in the heart of Herriot country - Thirsk, North Yorkshire, and are very much looking forward to keeping her beloved home in the family for many years to come by offering it as a delightful, yet quirky holiday let in this beautiful part of the world.

Ideal for holiday makers, families, walkers, cyclists or those who just want a short break, Thirsk itself is a friendly market town that has plenty to do for all the family, from antique shops, boutiques and lovely arts and crafts shops to dog friendly cafes, pubs and eateries. Thirsk is a traditional North Yorkshire Market town positioned midway between the stunning North York Moors and the beautiful Yorkshire Dales, right in the midst of Herriot country for those James Herriot fans. It is near to the medieval city of York, Harrogate, Ripon and our county town Northallerton.
Cod Beck and its riverbank is just 50 yards away with its abundance of ducks that the family can enjoy feeding (wet bread please though and not too much!). There are plenty of walks that start directly from Nana Duck’s cottage, following the river or through fields and pathways you can go further afield, enjoying the breath-taking Yorkshire countryside, including the Hambleton Hills with their many footpaths and cycleways.
Just two minutes away from Nana Duck’s cottage you will find the cobbled market square in the centre of Thirsk where you can enjoy the interesting pubs, buildings and houses many dating back to the eighteenth century, when Thirsk was an important posting station. Thirsk's oldest inns include the Three Tuns dating back to 1698 and The Golden Fleece that is thought to date back to Tudor times. As well museums, galleries the world-renowned James Herriot centre, Thirsk also has plenty of traditional shops, cafes and tearooms to choose from and even its own racecourse if you fancy a fun filled day out. There really is something for everyone and the best thing is, there's something to do all year round! Thirsk really can be enjoyed summer, winter, autumn or spring!
