So sad to see this 🙏

Thamé updates:
According to locals, what happened is that there was a small earthquake in the morning (felt at Lawudo), causing 2 recently formed glacial lakes to merge and slowly the disaster unfolded. In the early afternoon someone who was above Thamé saw the flooding torrent flushing down and called the people in the village to warn them and run up the hill for their lives. They didn't have any time to bring anything, they just ran up the hill and saw their houses being swept away. All human beings are safe but several cows didn't survive.

If you are considering visiting Lawudo at this time, please be informed that there is currently no electricity in the whole valley and there won't most likely be any for a long time - from Lukla to Thamé, including Namché and Lawudo. This also means the internet connectivity is almost inexistent and when there is, it is very slow.

If you would like to support the relief efforts, in particular for the school that was swept away, please consider participating in this fundraiser from the Bodhicitta Trust: https://donorbox.org/thame-birthplace-of-lama-zopa-rinpoche-flood-relief-fund

The photo below shows the state of Thamé after the disaster with houses and hotels demolished. Rinpoche's birth house (which you can see next to the prayer wheel house) is currently hosting locals who lost their property.

The leopard's camouflage is so amazing that it will be hard for you to notice it... 😮🐆

Getting an image like this is one of the most coveted achievements for wildlife photographers. It is complicated because this feline lives in places as inhospitable as the Himalayan mountains and, in addition, its skin allows it to hide in the environment.

Condolences in Response to the Death of Archbishop Desmond Tutu

Thekchen Chöling, Dharamsala, HP, India, December 26, 2021 - Immediately on being informed that his “respected elder spiritual brother and good friend” Archbishop Desmond Tutu had passed away, His Holiness the Dalai Lama composed a letter to the Archbishop’s daughter, Rev. Mpho Tutu.

“Please accept my heartfelt condolences,” he wrote, “and convey the same to your mother and other members of your family. I pray for him.

“As you know, over the years, your father and I enjoyed an enduring friendship. I remember the many occasions we spent time together, including the week here at Dharamsala in 2015 when we were able to share our thoughts on how to increase peace and joy in the world. The friendship and the spiritual bond between us was something we cherished.

“Archbishop Desmond Tutu was entirely dedicated to serving his brothers and sisters for the greater common good. He was a true humanitarian and a committed advocate of human rights. His work for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission was an inspiration for others around the world.

“With his passing away, we have lost a great man, who lived a truly meaningful life. He was devoted to the service of others, especially those who are least fortunate. I am convinced the best tribute we can pay him and keep his spirit alive is to do as he did and constantly look to see how we too can be of help to others.”

Like many Sherpas He also dreamt of going to the USA but when he wasn't successful he changed his plans and asked 15 Lakhs as loan from his parents to do business. His parents gave him the money after a lot of convincing and he paid the loan within 1 Year of his first business. His parents were very emotional and couldn't believe that he returned the money so fast. He then had the idea of opening a coffee house but his friends told him that No one would drink expensive coffee coming to such remote region. Years later, He gets the highest number of tourists at the cafe. He serves more than 20 thousand guests in a year and all big foreign celebrities that visits Namche comes to his place. Please take a minute to support the people of Nepal

There is a stark warning that the COVID crisis is going to be brutally bad in coming days in Nepal. Without pause, we urge the Gov. of UK to take swift effort to ease the pain and suffering of many by directly donating the essential materials (Oxygen & Ventilators) to the COVID patients in Nepal.
