We’re delighted to have opened the first Changing Places facility in the North York Moors National Park!

The first Changing Places toilet in the North York Moors National Park is now available for public use at Sutton Bank National Park Centre. Its opening is the latest milestone in a series of improvement works that have seen the landscapes of the North York Moors made more accessible than ever before.

Changing Places toilets offer enhanced accessibility by providing essential equipment like adjustable benches, hoists and extra space for caregivers. They ensure dignity, hygiene and comfort, allowing more people to visit beautiful areas and attend community events without facing the barrier of inadequate facilities.

We're also pleased to report that all-terrain Trampers are now available at seven locations across the North York Moors, with a brand-new vehicle and trail launched at Danby Lodge National Park Centre this summer. Both National Park Centres also have robust, custom-built wheelchairs available to borrow free of charge.

📣 Important announcement: Sutton Bank National Park Centre closure!

Unfortunately, we have had to close Sutton Bank National Park Centre today due to unforeseen circumstances. We are working on the problem and will keep you updated as to when the National Park Centre will re-open.

Please note, the café and toilets will be open as normal.

Even if Sutton Bank road was shut we made good use of the National Park Centre! Last week at Sutton Bank National Park Centre we ran an accessible bike trail event to understand the challenges and opportunities for accessible cycling around Sutton Bank.

Using a number of the trails including the "Butterfly" gravel loop and Cliff trail it was great to see a mixture of recumbent e-trikes and handcycles on the trail network, it highlighted the importance of ensuring we're able to offer an inclusive cycling experience

Thank you to volunteers for the support, Different Strokes York in York, Wheels 4 fun, Limitless (British Cycling) and Dalby Forest Cycle Hub for the adaptive bikes.

It’s a stunning Autumnal morning here today - we’ve also had our first frost!

Just a reminder, the A170 at Sutton Bank remains closed over the weekend. We are operating a temporary shop and information point in our foyer whilst scheduled works are carried out. Park Life Café Sutton Bank is open as normal!

Cafe Tender ☕🫖🍰

The North York Moors National Park Authority is seeking an experienced operator to supply the catering service provision at The National Park Centres at Sutton Bank (Thirsk, North Yorkshire, YO7 2EH) and Danby Lodge (Danby, Whitby, YO21 2NB).
Both centres have established cafe style operations accommodating up to 200,000 visitors across both sites per annum.

📣 Important announcement: road closure 🚗

From Sunday 8 September to Sunday 15 September Sutton Bank on the A170 between Helmsley and Thirsk will be closed. We are still open, however we are using this time to complete necessary works, so will be operating a reduced shop on a card only basis in our foyer. The cafe is open as normal.

A signed diversion will be in place and operatives will maintain access to homes on Sutton Bank where possible.

While we're undertaking works on the bridleway network there is a diversion in place on the Red Paradise Trail - please follow the diversion signs. The diversion is in place and should last for up to one week.

Come visit the past this August! On Saturday 3 August, the Ryevitalise Landscape Partnership Scheme is holding a free, family-friendly and unique day-long event as we recreate a medieval iron bloomery and demonstrate associated skills with local specialists.

Used to produce iron blooms for metalwork in the medieval period, the archaeological remains of these clay built ovens have been found throughout the River Rye catchment area - many of them in the Bilsdale and Rievaulx monastic landscape. Now we are helping to recreate the past, join us as we demonstrate this ancient technique and bring the past to life!
