Listed as one of the top places in the world to visit in 2025 by the New York Times, the Flow Country is a vast peat bog that covers much of Caithness in our corner of the north of Scotland. It hosts a diverse range of specialist plants and wildlife that have evolved to live in this environment and stores 400 million tonnes of carbon formed as vegetation rots and turns to peat. This is more carbon than all the UK's forests and woodlands combined. And, on top of that, It is also an internationally important place for wildlife, including birds like red-throated diver, golden plover and greenshank.
A Neolithic mystery? The House of the Northern Gate is built of stone quarried on site. Could that same stone have been used for the famous altar stone of Stonehenge some 5000 years and 1000km ago?
Well, quite possibly. A paper last year in Nature (“A Scottish provenance for the altar stone of Stonehenge”, Clarke et al) showed that the old red sandstone of the Orcadian basin was the likely source of the stone. A later paper showed that Orkney was not the source leaving Caithness as the main remaining part of the basin. Dunnet Head, where the House of the Northern Gate is, has had many quarries in the past and so might just be the source.
Let’s see what further studies show!

Happy Christmas from the House of the Northern Gate. The snow has fallen overnight on Dunnet Head and the spectacular views have changed from the purple and green of heather and the blue of the sea to a white winter wonderland. Now taking bookings for staying in 2024.#exclusiveholiday #visitscotland #familygatherings #dunnethead #luxuryscotland #dunnethead #houseofthenortherngate #scotishhighlands #caithness
Today was a beautiful, bracing, surprisingly mild day here on Dunnet Head. Perfect for a good walk down to the beach in the fresh air before coming back to decorate the tree. #exclusiveholiday #visitscotland #familygatherings #dunnethead #periodhome #scotishhighlands #caithness #sunrise #winterwalks
