It was Morvern Magic yesterday! We took the short crossing over the Sound of Mull and spent the day exploring some highland hills. There were spectacular views of Mull’s Munro, Ben More, above the cloud inversion.

Another beautiful day out with my guests from Yorkshire. All the iconic Isle of Mull wildlife was very obliging, and so was the weather.

Much colder days now, so if you’re coming along on a walking tour this Winter, don’t forget warm clothing, lots of layers, and hat and gloves.

After a long Ptarmigan drought, today was our lucky day. No stunning vistas from the mountain tops, due to the low cloud, but we were rewarded for our exertions with these spectacular views on the descent.

We’re making the most of the spectacular weather, seeing as there’s snow forecast for the mountain tops next week!

We had a private tour on Wednesday, across the water to Lochaline and the Ardtornish Estate. It was a stunning, easy, nine mile walk along the loch to Ardtornish Castle, once the principal seat of the Clan Donald.

Although the busy visitor season starts to slow down in October, I’ll be doing private tours and the Otter Detective Walk all Winter. Please get in touch if you need further information.

The season is flying by and we’ve had some incredible wildlife walks, despite the challenging weather at times.

The Otter Detective Walk is still my most popular tour and we’ve had great sightings on most of the walks this year.

Many thanks to Luca and family who sent me this iPhone video from their recent Mull Magic Walk.

The sun was shining and seas were calm, so I took the opportunity to visit the Isles of Staffa and Lunga with friends. What a truly amazing day with a plethora of sea birds. It’s tempting to remain on the Lunga plateau with the Puffins, but I would urge any bird watchers to make their way along the cliff path to Harp Rock. The sight, smell and sounds are truly magical.

Thank you Staffa Tours for a great day out.

At long last - it really feels like Spring has poked its head above the parapet. Blue skies galore, and the temperature has finally hit double figures. But for how long?

It’s been a fabulous week, with otters and eagles in abundance, but the highlights today were the first Cuckoo and Common sandpiper of the year. They may well wish they’d remained in Africa and the Mediterranean Basin if tomorrow’s projected rainfall is correct.

We went in search of the rare Belted Beauty moth today. It’s an attractive insect, active during the daytime, for just a few weeks starting in the middle of March. It lives in some of the most scenically beautiful places that can be found on Mull, and a trip to try and find them provided us with a breathtaking (and slightly challenging) Easter adventure.

Yesterday, a sunny spring day, we walked into a remote and rarely visited part of the island, in the hope of finding the early flowering Purple saxifrage (Saxifraga oppositifolia). This plant is very scarce on Mull, finding a home on a small number of steep and crumbly basalt cliffs. It helps to have a head for heights if you want to get a close view of these delicate, but beautiful wild flowers!

It’s a busy time for Mull Magic, getting everything ready for the new season, and the scheduled walks which start on Thursday 21st March. However, I wasn’t too busy to turn down the kind invitation from Tobermory Stores, to join them on their adventure with Coastal Connection to the Corryvreckan whirlpools. A fabulous day out with memories that will last a lifetime.

I’ve had a busy few days doing otter and mountain research, all ready for the start of the season. I had great sightings of otters yesterday, despite the stormy weather, and a beautiful Ptarmigan today. We’ve also had an aurora this week, although it was difficult to see with the naked eye, due to the cloud cover.

There’s been a real lack of snow on the Mull mountains this year, but we always make the most of the wintry conditions. Absolutely fabulous views yesterday from the summits of A’ Chioch and Ben More.

What a fantastic day today. It was -2 °C when we left Tobermory to go into the hills; my van doors were frozen solid. Hand warmers, foot warmers and ear warmers seemed essential items. But once we’d climbed above the cloud it was sunny, warm and spectacularly beautiful.

The weather between Christmas and New Year has been a bit mixed, but there have been a couple of days when it has been good enough for some otter watching. Wishing all the Mull Magic friends and followers a healthy and happy 2024.

It’s been a wild and windy Christmas Eve on the Isle of Mull, and unseasonably warm. We’ve not had the cold and crisp weather which we hope for at this time of year, but the storm light was beautiful, and constantly changing on the normally tranquil Loch na Keal today. The camera came out just in time to make the most of a brief moment when the sun managed to break through the cloud.

Happy Christmas from Mull Magic and very best wishes for 2024.
