There are no plans to hold a Wartime in the Cotswolds this year.

Wartime in the Cotswolds is cancelled
We are all aware of the terrible events unfolding in Ukraine. There appears to be no immediate indication that the conflict will end soon.

Daily news of death and destruction on a wide scale have led us to consider whether it is appropriate to continue to promote and hold our Wartime in the Cotswolds Weekend this year.

After giving the matter considerable thought the Board are unanimously of the view that we should cancel the event this year. The event was intended to be a joyful weekend and that conflicts deeply with what we now see happening. We believe that to continue would send completely the wrong message to our potential visitors and the wider public.

For the same reason, we have decided that the Schools Evacuation days should be suspended until the middle of the year, or until the situation in Ukraine settles down.

We realise that a considerable amount of work has gone into planning and organising these events this year, and that many of you will be disappointed by our decision. However, we have an obligation to make what we believe to be the right decision for our railway, and we are satisfied that in this case we have done so.

The weekend of 23rd / 24th April will revert to a standard purple timetable.

The Board, GWSR Plc.

The wartime team would like to thank everyone who had committed to joining us.

Platform 1 Winchcombe in the Tim Mitchell Building.
Come and view the RAF Plotting Room.
We have all seen old photos and film footage of RAF plotting rooms during WWII. We will be having demonstrations at 10:40, 11:40 13:40 and 15:40 each day where all will be explained, this is the time to discover what pushing those blocks about on a map was all about.

It all goes to show what a new rhythm can do

It seems that jiving, jumping is a powerful job

Wartime in the Cotswolds are looking forward to seeing Boots on the Ground 23/24th April, 2022

With it now being very near to the end of January it’s not long now till the first event of our 2022 season.
It’s going to be great to be able to go back to the Gloucester & Warwick Steam Railway’s 1940’s weekend in April.
The guys have been going to this event from its very first weekend, Covid put payed to the event in the past two years so it great to be able to come back and give the railway and this event our support.
The picture is of the guys at the Gloucester goes retro event last September and the GWSR had this bus with a fantastic vinyl advertisement on it and the chaps just had to have their pictures taken in front of it.

Wishing you a very happy, healthy and peaceful New Year. The team are looking forward to seeing you 23/24 April 2022.

For the Fallen
BY LAURENCE BINYON
With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.

Solemn the drums thrill; Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres,
There is music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
They sleep beyond England's foam.

But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the Night;

As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain;
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.
