Gentle slopes and excellent ski schools make Zell a favourite for families and first-timers. On the mountain, there’s a mix of pretty, tree-lined trails and wide-open pistes where you can take in views of the lake. Intermediates and advanced skiers have the Kitzsteinhorn glacier, not to mention runs in the linked Ski Circus area to play with.
The town has a picture-postcard feel. Frescoed buildings line the cobbled main square, and a waterfront promenade looks out across the lake to the Hohe Tauern mountains beyond. The old centre is filled with shops and cafés, as well as some excellent bars – from après hotspots with packed-out dancefloors to cosy pubs where you can catch up over a quiet drink.

One of Zell’s standout stays, this family-run pick packs in plenty of perks. Front and centre facilities-wise is the excellent spa, with multiple saunas, a steam room and menu of tempting treatments. And then there’s the connected indoor and outdoor heated pool, where you can soak in the warm water after day on the slopes.
As for looks, think modern alpine style. We’re talking log-burning fires and chairs that hang from the ceiling in the lobby and bar, where you can listen to live music most evenings. Upstairs, the bedrooms range from snug to super spacious and lots have balconies, so you can step out to breath in the crisp alpine air.
