This week we swapped the water for the wild as we headed out to Whipsnade Zoo for a family day out.

Set in over 600 acres of stunning Chiltern Hills countryside, Whipsnade is the UK's largest zoo and is home to thousands of amazing creatures. From lions and rhinos to meerkats and reptiles, you can enjoy a truly immersive wildlife experience. It's always a favourite of ours when we have a day out and the highlights this time were the 2 adorable baby giraffes and a visit to the butterfly house.

If you are looking for a great day out on your next narrowboat adventure with us, Whipsnade is just a 15 minute taxi ride from Marsworth.

Casting off for the first time this summer? It's as simple as 1 - 2 - 3

1. Have a crewmate stand on the towpath holding the centre line, while you untie the mooring lines from the front and back of the boat and stow away all the mooring pins and ropes safely aboard.
2. With your crewmate still holding the centre line from the towpath, get into your driving position on the boat and then ask them to gently push the front of the boat away from the bank.
3. They can then walk along the towpath and board the back of the boat, which should still be next to the bank. Now, apply a small amount of throttle and steer your way to the centre of the canal and head off on your adventure!

I love admiring the lock keepers cottages that are scattered along our historic waterways. These quaint and secluded cottages weren't just homes... they were vital to the canal's operation, housing the lock keepers who played a key role in making sure boats could navigate the locks safely and quickly.

Can you imagine the stories these walls could tell?

Aldbury is easily one of the prettiest villages nestled in the Chiltern Hills. With traditional cottages surrounding the village pond, two inviting pubs and a historic church, it's no wonder this charming little place has been featured in many a TV series and film (The Royals, Midsomer Murders & The Dirty Dozen to name just a few!).

How to get here: Moor up near bridge 135 and head north along Station Road - it takes about 25 minutes to get to Aldbury. Alternatively, jump in a taxi at Tring Train station which is just a 2 minute walk from the same bridge.

While leisure boats and liveaboards dominate the canals today, traditional fuel boats are still a very important part of canal life! They are are a reminder of the role canals played in delivering goods, and though they not be the fastest form of delivery these days, these working boats are vital for delivering essential supplies like coal, diesel, and wood to the communities along the waterways.

Have you spotted your local fuel boat? Tag them in the comments below and share your appreciation for the work they do 👇

One of our favourite mooring spots - Canal Fields in Berkhamsted!

With a beautiful open picnic area and a great kids play area, it's a lovely stopping point for a lazy afternoon in the sun. There are plenty of mooring spots on the opposite side of the canal, and it's a convenient place to stop if you want to stock up the kitchen cupboards at Waitrose or take a short walk into Berkhamsted town centre.

How to get here: Canal Fields is located between lock 52 and lock 53. There are 2 footbridges which provide easy access to Canal Fields from the towpath, and there is also a public water point near bridge 140B if you need to refill the tank 💦

Where's your unexpected happy place? This is my mine...
the rear cabin in Narrow Escape

At the end of a day out on the waterways, this is where we come together as a family to enjoy a good meal and play a board game or two. And, once the evening is over, it easily converts into the perfect sleeping space to snuggle up and enjoy a bedtime story with our 6 year old son.

So many treasured memories have been made in this cabin 😊

Looking for a unique escape into the great outdoors with your loved one? Look no further than "Mini Escape," our charmingly cosy narrowboat, perfectly designed for unforgettable adventure for two!

We bought this narrowboat from a local boatyard a few years ago, after it had been sat out of the water for several years. The paintwork was peeling, the interior was rotting but there was something about this tiny little boat that we fell in love with. We (read Gareth!) spent months restoring the boat, giving it a whole new paint job, a brand new interior and a fresh new lease of life.

Now it has a lovely living area with a sofabed, smart TV and a log burner for those cooler nights, as well as a well equipped kitchen and bathroom. Plus, the cruiser stern provides a lovely space for 2 to relax together as you cruise the waterways. It's definitely my favourite boat to get away in for a few nights!

The town of Berkhamsted in Hertfordshire was once home to a bustling inland port and a centre for boat building activity on the Grand Union canal.

Today, hints of the town's boating history can still be seen, and with a number of canal side pubs to enjoy, peaceful moorings at Canal Fields, and just a 2 minute walk from canal to the High Street with a huge array of restaurants and boutique shops, a stopover in Berkhamsted is highly recommended.
