(Supporting the Community Again)

Coast2Coast Motorhome Hire is consistently supporting the community with permanent discounts for NHS staff and raising money for the Falmouth RNLI via Coast Diver Motorhome.

However seven days ago today we were delighted to attend Kernow Dive Fest 2021, where we met many lovely people from the diving community. This event is normally held annually to raise money for the charity DDRC https://www.ddrc.org/ . It was a fantastic evening around the BBQ and our pleasure to attend. Louise Allen gave a presentation about Coast Diver Motorhome and offered a 4 night holiday, free of charge for the main auction on the evening. We were very proud to have raised over £600 for their Charity. May I say a very big thank you to David White for the invitation to the event, and to the Campsite- https://cardinney-camping-park.co.uk/ for kindly providing Coast Diver with a free pitch. Overall a big thank you to all of you who attended and supported the Charity DDRC and showed such a fantastic interest in Coast Diver Motorhome.

Please tag, share with all your diving buddies as Coast Diver Motorhome wishes to keep you up to date with our latest news and offers.

Here’s a selection of pictures from the event

Spent the last 5 days staying on the Coast Diver Motorhome at Coast2Coast on behalf of Dave Hanlon & Louise Allen to check out what turned out to be an ideal Cornish location for diving, snorkelling, rock jumping, paddle boarding, kayaking, surfing & swimming and …. more. One of the best features was having an awesome lagoon on your doorstep in addition to plenty of beautiful & clean dog/child friendly coastal walks and beaches to choose from, finished off with glorious sunsets. We had a 5 ⭐️ experience and so very well looked after and would 💯 recommend and feel privileged to be able to help these guys out 👍😊

Whilst browsing the internet before another really busy day we discovered this fantastic article, it's about making scuba diving accessible to anyone, from adult quadriplegics to children with autism. Does anyone know anywhere in or close to Cornwall that offers this?

The Mohegan is sometimes called ‘the Cornish Titanic’ and although at just under 7000 tons, she was smaller than the Titanic, it was nevertheless a dreadful disaster when this liner struck the Manacles reef in October of 1898 with 58 passengers and 104 crew aboard. The reasons for the accident are...

Some divers like to visit the same sites time and time again and there’s nothing wrong with that. I’m the opposite. Given the choice between a popular site or having the chance to explore somewhere new, I’ll always take the latter option. And so it was that I came across the SS Grip....

Site 9: Wembury

I can’t think about Wembury without feeling a deep sense of nostalgia. I grew up in the quiet village of Elburton, which is on the eastern edge of Plymouth. When the urge to explore the sea began to take hold, I would pack my snorkelling gear into my duffel bag and walk the 5 miles or so over to Wembury, to snorkel until my fingers and toes went numb.

Wembury is a voluntary marine conservation area and the underwater life certainly reflects that. Heading off the beach towards the Mewstone, the Jagged island just offshore, is like a marine safari. Cuttlefish, various small sharks and rays are plentiful in depths of 7-10 metres. If you were to dive the Mewstone by boat (and you should) you will encounter the Mewstone drop-off to the south of the Island, where the remains of an American Flying Fortress Bomber can be seen (but not touched of course).

But you don’t have to venture that far out to find a wreck. Among the vessels which came to grief on, or around, the Mewstone, are the barque August Smith (1895), the brigantine St Pierre (1897), the Industry (1851), the Ocean Queen (1852), the Ajax (1854) the fishing boat Matilda (1866) and the steamer Rothsay (1877). There are also various cannons scattered around, some dating back to the 17th century.

There is plenty of parking at Wembury, which is owned by the National Trust. It is best dived around high water and avoid it in a southerly wind. Just get to Plymouth and pop Wembury in your satnav.

The weather here has very wet recently, so we thought we would offer a bit of a giveaway, here is your chance at owning your very own… wait for it….. exclusive…. you’ll love this….. Coast Diver MUG!!!

We all like a nice mug of something warm in bad weather, and what better way to drink it than from an official Coast Diver mug showing the 10 golden rules of diving.

So we have 5 mugs to give away, to enter simply “like this post and like and follow our page”, and then “share this post to as many of your dive buddies as you can”. Next Sunday (4th July) we will pick a name at random to win.

The rules (sorry there has to be some):
Entries will only be counted if the entrant has liked both our page and the competition post as well as sharing the post.
Anyone can enter however we can only post to a UK address, so if you live outside of the UK please ensure you have someone (or a forwarding service) with a UK address we can send it to if you are one of the winners, otherwise we won’t be able to get it to you.
Staff and their families cannot enter, sorry.
Closing date for this competition is Sunday 4th July 2021 at 20:00 (8pm). Winners will be chosen within a few days after this and announced on our page (also contacted via PM). The winners can decline the prize, in that event it will be re-drawn.
There is no monetary equivalent for the prize, and no purchase necessary. We can only post to winners within the UK.

Port Quin

Port Quin is a tiny former fishing hamlet which nestles between Port Isaac and Polzeath. It is now owned by the National Trust who maintain the cottages as holiday lets. Legend has it that in the 16th century, the entire population was enslaved by Barbary pirates, but there is no concrete evidence for this. However, tragedy did strike the community in the 19th century, when the entire fishing fleet was lost in a storm leaving, 32 widows.

The site consists of a tidal fjord, some 400 metres long. It can be dived at all states of the tide but planning to dive around high water is by far the best option. The site is teeming with life which inhabit low lying reefs, all the way out to the mouth of the fjord. Scorpion fish are particularly plentiful here. Heading South at the entrance will bring you into an area of larger gullies at a depth of about 15 metres, where the vertical surfaces are covered with invertebrate life. There are a number of small caves and the wreckage of a fishing boat here too.

Ensure that you gave enough gas (and energy) for the swim back, before you venture too far out! About 200m out are the Cow and Calf rocks which are an interesting dive but unless you have a scooter, this should be considered a boat dive.

The site can be busy, especially in Summer and at weekends and parking is occasionally tricky, so an early start is recommended. This site is suitable for all grades of diver but remember to turn around and head back with plenty of gas in reserve. It is a sheltered site in most winds, although a west or north-westerly wind can blow it out.

Post code is PL29 3SU.

Porth Nanven (Cot Valley)

The diving around Lands’ End should rightfully be among the most popular in the UK, but for one thing: access. Launch sites are few and far between and even getting to the small number of suitable beaches can be a slog. I will be mentioning some of the breath-taking offshore sites in this area at some point, but first, a little known gem called Port Nanven beach. I would class this as either an excellent snorkelling site or an ok boat dive. You CAN dive off the beach here, but it is covered in large round boulders which have the potential to cause serious damage if you tackle them in full kit. So why bother?

Well, the water just off the beach is often very clear and full of marine life. Seals and even basking sharks come in close to the shallows here making snorkelling the natural (and more comfortable) choice. And as with just about every cove in Cornwall, there is a wreck to see. In this case, another submarine called the L1. A British vessel built at Barrow-in Furness in 1916, she was a relatively large submarine for the time at just under 900 tons. She was decommissioned in 1930 and was under tow from Chatham to Monmouth to be scrapped, when she broke free and ended up in her current location which is on the rocks and sand on the south side (left) of the cove.

Entering the water just before high tide will avoid so much boulder scrambling and calm conditions are essential as Atlantic swells can hit this part of the coast, especially in westerly winds.

Above the water, the area is beautiful and you may be lucky enough to spot the rare chough, Cornwall’s emblematic bird.

To find the site, drive to St Just and follow the signs for Cot Valley. When the road runs out, you’ve arrived.

Site 5. Durgan

Whenever life gets too busy, hectic or frustrating, I have a special place in my head where I retreat to find calm and tranquillity. That place is at about 7 metres deep, off the beach at Durgan. To find this hidden gem, take the A394 from Falmouth to Helston and look out for signs to Trebah Gardens, then Durgan or use the post code TR11 5JR. This will take you to a National Trust car park. Drop your gear by the beach at the bottom of the hill and park in the car park, or kit up and walk down the hill if you are an Olympic athlete!

This site is best dived around high tide or just before to give the best visibility and depth. Swimming to the right will take you into some boat moorings which are not particularly inspiring, although there is some sea grass here and you may glimpse a sea horse or two. Heading more to the left, or east will give slightly more depth and a shingle seabed with some small boulders. This bit of seabed is a haven for thornback, blonde and undulate rays, so buoyancy control is vital to avoid sitting on one! There are shoals of sand eels, mackerel, cat sharks, bass and the occasional seal to be seen too. Nudibranchs are prolific here too.

Beware of boat traffic, and a strong easterly wind, but enjoy this gem of a site.
