King Harry Ferry no II proved to be very hardworking! In December 1929, she sank on her moorings after being rammed by a Coal Elevator at night. She was refloated but needed extensive repairs lasting three months before regular service resumed. This Ferry had operated for nearly 20 years before increased traffic and increased expensive repairs meant it was time to think about a new one. 1934, the company purchased a new ferry from Saltash Ferries to become Ferry no III. However, she used too much coal when put into service and needed an extra crew to operate the gates. Being too expensive to run, three months later, trusty Ferry no II came back into service. This Ferry, built in 1913 and considered for replacement in 1933, continued through the war into 1950 with an impressive 37 years of service! 💙

The second KHF was built in 1913 by Messrs. Cox & Co (later to become Messrs. Silley, Cox & Co) of Falmouth. This new ferry made a 20% saving on the coal bill which delighted the Company as there had been a sharp rise in the price of coal - the bill in 1914 was £78; in 1916 it had risen to £168! In 1927 the Company only had 10cwt of coal left and had to supplement with wood to keep running. This was partially due to the General Strike of 1926 and the continuing difficulty of getting supplies ⛴

We love a good coastal walk!

A bit of a clamber across rocks along a rather rugged Path out of Portloe eases around the more pastoral landscape of Caerhays Castle, before becoming tougher again on the approach to Hemmick Beach. From here the high cliffs to the windswept, 375 foot headland of Dodman Point looms ahead. Views from...

The King Harry Ferry Steam Company was formed in 1888, but the first crossing was at 6am on September 19th 1889. The only passengers were Mr H Thomas, the Secretary, Mr A B Brumage, the Engineer, and the representative of the 'Gazette'. There was a half-hourly service and a great deal of traffic later that day. Apparently, there were some adverse comments about the noise caused by the chain as it was taken up. The steam ferry initially used a single chain, which lay at the bottom of the river and was secured at both banks. This soon changed as the chain frequently broke and left the ferry adrift! Subsequent ferries were all fitted with two chains ⛴ ⛓

We are raising funds throughout the year for Little Harbour, Children's Hospice South West. There's a £1 charge for foot passengers which we donate entirely to this wonderful local charity, the only children's hospice in the South West providing care from three hospices in Devon, North Somerset and Cornwall. They provide care for more than 500 families in the South West and their services are free to every family that needs them 💚 Thank you for your support.

Our story

Connecting St Mawes and the Roseland with Feock, Truro and Falmouth.

Established in 1888, it connects St Mawes and the Roseland Peninsula with Feock, Truro and Falmouth by avoiding the alternative 27 mile route through Truro & Tresillian.

Each year the King Harry Ferry saves 5 million car miles, 1.7 million kg of CO2 and ¾ of a million litres of fuel. It carries 300,000 cars every single year.

One of only five chain ferries in England, it departs every 20 minutes from each side, 7 days a week and the ferry is a key transport link for visitors and locals alike.
