Nice little trip out to North Berwick today dropping a lovely couple over from the States, in Edinburgh for a wedding, who just wanted to see a gorgeous little seaside town for the lady, Lisa’s birthday! Had to wait and bring them back into town and couldn’t resist a stroll. Robert Louis Stevenson used to spend his childhood holidays here and gained inspiration for his novels from the area. Bass Rock sits out just offshore and is home to 75,000 Gannets, the largest colony in the world! The Watcher statue, created by Scottish artist Kenny Hunter, is a life-sized male figure cast in bronze, dressed in outdoor wear, typical of a bird watcher and he is gazing out to the Rock. When they migrate south over the winter Bass Rock turns grey again, it’s only white because of the birds!
If you ever visit Edinburgh and fancy a trip out here let me know?..it’s less than an hours drive!

It was a pleasure to tour with Julie from Florida last week, a lovely lady planning a solo trip all over Scotland over the next few days!
She was so lucky with the weather as well because the weather 2 days later was awful with the Haar, sea mist, descending on us and wiping out the incredible views🙈

It was a privilege to show these lovely sisters Cathy and Harriet, and her daughter, around Edinburgh on a 4 hour tour yesterday!
They totally got how special Edinburgh is with all its history as well as the cool neighbourhoods such as Marchmont, Bruntsfield and Stockbridge which are just a few minutes drive from the hustle and bustle of the Royal Mile.
We started on Calton Hill and did the usual stops including Greyfriars Kirkyard to see Bobby’s resting place and the steel mort safes that were used to cover the graves to stop the grave robbers stealing the bodies to sell to the Medical School across the road in the early 1800’s! Views from The Vennel towards the castle were great and the cakes at La Barantine on Victoria Street looked so tasty that the ladies just had to stop and sample some! The sisters were trying to trace Scottish ancestors at St Cuthberts Churchyard and had a list of surnames memorised and when they actually found a potential ancestor it was quite emotional! Bum the Dog, gifted to Edinburgh from San Diego as the two cities are twinned and views to the Castle were an added bonus!!

Fantastic Speyside Whisky tour with brothers Igor and Luis and their wives, also sisters!….and friends from Merida, Yuctan, Mexico.
A 6.30am start and back to Edinburgh by 10.30pm the same night is a long day but worth it for real whisky fans! The group had lots of chances to sample the golden nectar!
We visited the Glenallachie, Glenfarclas, Glenfiddich, Glenliviet, Cardhu and Macallan distilleries and the two brothers even had the honour of bottling their own whisky at Glenfiddich and signing the book!
These absolutely lovely people were a pleasure to spend the day with and to see how much they enjoyed sampling the different blends at each distillery!

It was a pleasure to show the lovely Mary Anne from the USA the layout of the City so she could explore on her own for a few days before setting off for a two week solo driving trip around Scotland! So jealous!
Mary Anne was a little camera shy and forget her phone so no shots but we did the main must see sights and even out as far as Newhaven Harbour and the Shore area of Edinburgh. While we were in Greyfriars Kirkyard we came across a guy reciting the poetry, out loud but to no one until we walked past, of William McGonagall 1825-1902, known as the worst poet in history! We got chatting and he was full of history and stories and really made our day and he explained he was paying homage to McGonagall!
JK Rowling took the name off his headstone for one of the characters in the Harry Potter books. I was also trying to explain that the Edinburgh Festivals were in full swing and in George Square there is a huge purple cow with its legs in the air that is actually a festival venue…she was looking at me like I was crazy as you can imagine so here are some shots of cow and the festival to prove I haven’t lost my mind😂

Picked up a fantastic group of people from the cruise terminal at South Queensferry, Angelina and Nick with friends Lito and Nimfa all from the Philippines originally but living in California for 40+ years!
Do these guys like taking photos…think they broke the tour record for pictures taken of literally everything…even the baldy old tour guide! We managed to dodge the rain showers mostly and were lucky they didn’t spoil the tour. Views from Calton Hill were amazing as always and we visited the Holyrood Abbey Sanctuary on Abbey Strand where people with debts could evade capture by the authorities as long as they made it to the sanctuary which are marked by the 3 brass S’s embedded in the road. Imprisonment for debts was abolished in 1880!
We did a loop of the city taking in St Margaret’s Loch and St Anthony’s Chapel, The Royal Botanic Gardens, Fettes College and its grand gate, Dean Village with the magnificent Well Court building and back out to the cruise terminal at South Queensferry.

When the kid decides to drag Dad up to play golf on Bruntsfield Links two nights on the go and you are absolutely useless at the game but realise we are playing on a course at 9.30pm in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle looking over us on one of oldest courses in the world where the game has been played since the 15th century, which makes up for the frustration of actually trying to hit a ball…almost!😂

When you are lucky enough to get a job from Edinburgh airport dropping a family off in the Gorbals area of Glasgow and while driving around looking for a toilet before heading back you keep finding these amazing murals and think just chill out and take your time….and just as you start berating yourself for wasting time you get an actual return job picking up a nurse heading back over to one of the hospitals in Edinburgh!
What a lucky taxi driving day! Thanks again to the Taxi Drivers God!🙏

Calton Hill Edinburgh last night just as the sun was going down. The views up here look out over the whole city and to the Kingdom of Fife across the Firth of Forth and along the east coast and the Scottish Borders. You HAVE to come up here if you visit Edinburgh!
Calton Hill was Edinburgh’s first public park and one of Britain’s oldest, and was purchased by Edinburgh Town Council in 1724! Calton Hill is the birthplace of astronomy and timekeeping at the City Observatory and James Craig, the architect of Edinburghs New Town, designed and lived in the first Observatory house here in 1770’s. The City Observatory was built in 1818 by the architect William Henry Playfair who also designed The National Monument which was planned as a tribute to the Scottish soldiers and sailors who died in the Napoleonic Wars and was supposed to resemble the Parthenon in Greece but was never finished due to lack of funds and the project was abandoned in 1829 and was known as ‘Edinburgh’s Disgrace’ because of this. Admiral Nelson has his famous upturned telescope monument here which was completed in 1816 and built to commemorate his victory over the French and Spanish fleets at the battle of Trafalgar in 1805 and his own death at the same battle.
Besides all the history the hill is just an amazing place to come up and see the whole of Edinburgh stretching out before you!

It was a pleasure to spend 2 days touring with this lovely couple, Bill and Catherine living in Vermont and Florida. Bills daughter Sarah and her fiancé Luke did a tour with me last year and Sarah kindly recommend me to her father…thanks!🙏
We had a great time doing a little Edinburgh tour and the next day we drove up to Fort William via some amazing tour stops on the way up…The Three Bridges, The Kelpies, Stirling Castle, The Trossachs Woollen Mill to feed the Coos and grab some lunch ourselves then up to Loch Lubnaig and the Three Sisters at Glen Coe before heading down to the couples hotel at Fort William where we parted company. The couple had booked a trip on the Harry Potter train which is now running again! We were sort of lucky with the weather as the further up into the Highlands we went the more rain showers tried to soak us but we managed to get out and get the shots we wanted without getting soaked!
I had no rain and bright sunshine all the way back to Edinburgh…welcome to Scotland and its crazy weather and amazing scenery!

Fantastic tour today with Merv and Sarah from Melbourne and Chris and Gail from the US out to the glorious East Neuk of Fife direct from their cruise liner, Seaborn Soujorn, that had docked at Newhaven Harbour this morning.
Merv and Sarah had booked the tour months ago and invited the others along after they all became friendly aboard the ship. First stop Lower Largo, birthplace of Robinson Crusoe, with its lovely beach, quaint houses and artwork dotted around. Next stop Elie beach which is even more amazing then onto St Monans where Merv and Sarah walked the 35 minute hike along the Fife Coastal Path while we headed up to Pittenweem where Chris and Gail had a great cappuccino in The Cocoa Tree Cafe. We all met up again and headed along to Anstruther where they all enjoyed the best fish and chips at the Anstruther Fish Bar!
They were so lucky with the weather as we have actually had two glorious summer days in a row….errr…until this evening when it decided to rain with no warning…welcome to Scotland!😂

It was lovely to meet and spend time with Kim and Chris from Victoria, BC, fresh off the cruise liner at Hawes Pier out at South Queensferry this morning. We had planned a little 4 hour tour of Edinburgh but a neighbour of theirs back home said the Kelpies were amazing so we headed out for a visit!
I had to ask if Kim was an Outlander fan as we had to pass Lallybroch…oops…Midhope Castle on the way and she was! Had to stop of course and we were the very first tour party to turn up and so we had the whole place to ourselves for about 20 minutes before the hordes of Outlander fans turned up!
Next stop, the Kelpies, looking amazing as ever and then a little tour of Edinburgh visiting some of the key sites including Dean Village which looked amazing in the sun, before dropping these lovely people at Edinburgh Castle for their booked tour at 12 noon.
Added bonus that the forecasted rain didn’t turn up and it was actually sunny… like an actual summers day!

When you pick up American guests at Ocean Terminal Cruise Liner dock, stepping ashore off Azamara Quest, and ask if there are any golf fans onboard and one goes “Yeeahhh!”…..then you know you have to take them a few blocks down the road before heading uptown for a photo stop with Dr John Rattray on Leith Links. Rattray was a surgeon, Jacobite and skilled golfer and signed the first 13 rules of golf and actually won the competition in 1744! It was lovely to meet Karen and friends and tour with them for 4 hours taking in the usual amazing Edinburgh sights plus a few beers down in Biddy Mulligans bar in the Grassmarket!

It was a pleasure to spend a couple of days touring with the Milligan’s from Alberta, Canada last week…Dennis, Marcie and Nicole.
Day 1 was the Outlander tour leaving Edinburgh and stopping at Hopetoun House(Duke of Sandringhams Estate), Midhope Castle(Lallybroch), Blackness Castle(Fort William), Linlithgow Palace(Wentworth Prison), Doune Castle(Castle Leoch), Callander for lunch and to feed the Coos and then down to Culross(Claire’s Herb Garde/Cranesmuir), Aberdour Castle(Benedictine monastery, Abbey St Anne de Beaupre) Dysart Harbour(Port of Le Harve), Falkland(1940’s Inverness) and then home to Edinburgh after a full on day visiting these amazing Outlander filming locations!
Day 2 we did the East Neuk of Fife on the way to the home of golf, St Andrews and the most famous little bridge in the world!
Thanks for the gifts guys!…a bottle of maple syrup, a water bottle and t-shirt all with the Canadian flag!

Fantastic tour up to Glencoe last week with Mum and Dad, Anju and Rajesh and kids, Druv and Aria from Hyderabad in India.
Druv had just graduated from college in Boston and this Scotland trip was a little treat to celebrate.
We drove out of Edinburgh and up to visit Doune Castle which was used in a few well known films and shows...Castle Leoch in Outlander, Winterfell in Game of Thrones and Monty Python and the Holy Grail!
We stopped to feed the Coo’s at The Trossachs Woollem Mill and then a quick stop for the views along Loch Lubnaig and then onto The Falls of Dochart at Killin and a look around St Fillans old mill and then up to Tyndrum for lunch at The Real Food Cafe, a popular stop, always busy.
We were lucky with the weather and only caught a little rain over Rannoch Moor and Glencoe was moody and atmospheric but dry and fairly warm!
Hamish is relishing his assistant tour guide role and the family insisted on getting a picture with him with The Wee White House and Buachaille Etive Mor in the background looking amazing!
Hamish also showed them the James Bond Skyfall shot down in Glen Etive where Bond and M are looking down the glen where Bond grew up and he mumbles ‘Mmmmm’ when M asks him if this is where he grew up and how old he was when his parents died?
It’s a long drive to the actual scene location down the glen but when you see the rocks on the left by the lay-by you will know you are standing where Bond and M were!
We headed home with a few droopy heads in the back from the jet lag but we had a great day out and saw a little of why Scotland is such an amazingly beautiful country!

Great tour earlier this week with this fantastic couple, Allan and Carolyn from the USA on a delayed by one year honeymoon, both in their 80’s, no really! It was a pleasure to meet them and show them a little of Edinburgh’s treasures!
Did the usual tour of the city but also made a stop at the old Medical School where Allan’s great, great grandfather studied medicine in the mid 1800’s. We had to go see Edinburgh's most famous dog as well, Greyfriars Bobby and got a shot of his resting place in front of Greyfriars Kirk. Great view of Edinburgh Castle from the Vennel as well. We also stopped along the Royal Mile at White Horse Close, 1623, where the old White Horse Inn was the departure point for stagecoaches that ran between Edinburgh, Newcastle and London in the 18th century.
We headed further up the Royal Mile stopping at the Canongate Kirk, resting place of Adam Smith, the economist, and the poet Robert Ferguson whose full size statue is seen walking past the Kirk. David Rizzio, Queen Mary of Scot’s private secretary, who was murdered at nearby Holyrood Palace is also buried here. There is always so much history and fascinating characters to discover when visiting Edinburgh!

Hamish, the Edinburgh Tours in a Taxi assistant tour guide and tour map reader said he knew just the place to take two lovely ladies, Sharon and Beth from the USA, to meet some Highland Cows! Hamish says you can guarantee to get up close to Holly, Hamish Dubh and Baxter at the Trossachs Woollen Mill at Kilmahog, just outside Callander and only an hours drive from Edinburgh. You can buy a bag of feed for the gang in the gift shop but beware Holly will spit the potatoes out but she loves a carrot😂 We left Edinburgh covered in the thick Haar, sea mist, and onto the first stop at Midhope Castle otherwise known as Lallybroch in Outlander. Then onto Stirling Castle for a quick look, and a pic of Robert the Bruce’s statue, again shrouded in mist and we could barely make out the Wallace monument in the distance. Then onto Doune Castle or Castle Leoch to Outlander fans!
Next stop the Highland Coos before all the other tours arrived and they ate too much and get so full they won’t take a treat by hand! We had a great time meeting them up close before taking in the views at Loch Lubnaig before heading back to Callander to grab lunch at Mhor Bread and then on home to Edinburgh via the David Stirling Memorial, the founder of the SAS! A great 5 hour tour with these lovely ladies and Hamish!

Beautiful day out over in the East Neuk of Fife today for a walk and lunch in Pittenweem at The Cocoa Tree cafe, our favourite place for a treat.
It was sunburn weather believe it or not!
Hamish was sweating underneath all that Highland Coo fur and thought the mural of the seabird was real for a second and we could hear him squealing for help while he was trying to cool down in the breeze! Great fun collecting sea glass, old clay bottle shards, sea worn bricks and just 1 piece of coloured pottery on the West Shore.
Fantastic sunset on the way back over the Queensferry Crossing so we just had to stop at South Queensferry for a shot or two!

Lovely walk across town from our neighbourhood this evening along Portobello beach.
The pictures look serene but it was freezing cold in the wind and we could see our breath on every exhale!
Portobello promenade and beach are great for a stroll, the dogs love it, kids playing football and scootering, joggers running the length and back, swimmers braving the freezing water, teens grabbing a pizza from Civerinos and eating it by the beach fire and finding a lovely house where Sir Walter Scott visited in 1827 on the way back to the car! Just another one of the many great things about living in Edinburgh!

It was a pleasure to meet John and Barbara from the NY suburbs disembarking off the MS Rotterdam at South Queensferry today!
We were supposed to drive straight back into Edinburgh and tour the city but Barbara happened to mention she was a big Outlander fan and so we just had to go see Midhope Castle aka Lallybroch and Culross aka Cranesmuir as they were so close!
We stopped at North Queensferry for views of the rail bridge and then Culross and Midhope and back into Edinburgh to take in the views from Calton Hill and then on down to Holyrood, a drive around Arthur’s Seat and then Victoria Street/Diagon Alley and the two cafes where JK Rowling wrote some of her Harry Potter novels…Barbara is a massive Harry Potter fan too! Finally we drive up to Edinburgh Castle and then down to see the New Town, Circus Lane, Fettes College and some Highland Coos on the way back to the boat.
Gorgeous weather and a great day for a totally bespoke tour!

When you are lucky enough to live so near such an amazing walk to clear the head after a long day behind the wheel!
A lovely stroll along the Union Canal heading west past the old boathouse at Harrison Park and turning back at The Bonnie Prince Charlie bridge, the one with the graffiti!
Prince Charles Edward Stuart really did stop here overnight on 16th of Sept 1745 with his Highland army at Slateford just outside Edinburgh and while his troops bivouacked in an adjoining field the Prince fixed his headquarters in the Gray’s Mill farmhouse. Always a lovely bit of history dotted around Edinburgh…now there are huge Asda and Sainsbury’s supermarkets where the army would have camped, not quite so romantic! Fantastic architecture by Sir James Gowans 1821-1890 on the way back!

Dropped the cab off at RS Coachworks down in Leith for the big guy Raja and his sons to work their magic and get rid of a scrape in the side of the bodywork - don’t ask, it wasn’t me!🙈 - and took a walk back up Leith Walk and up to explore Calton Hill. Always love this city, its history and amazing views…no place like it in the world❤️
