It seems I can only deactivate this page or leave it as it is, nothing in between. I know some of you will be interested to see the building progress and be the first to know when we re-open bookings, so I’ll aim to leave it in semi-hibernation, and just pop in from time to time to say hello and turn the leaves!

We are taking a break for a while to focus on family and the long-awaited barn conversion. It will be strange not to be welcoming visitors next summer but it makes sense for many reasons. I’m trying to work out how to rest this page too, so it doesn’t fill up with weird unrelated stuff!

Being so near to our glorious coast and surrounded by farmland, I’ve been guilty of neglecting our county town of Haverfordwest. I joined a group organised by West Wales Rivers Trust on Wednesday for a couple of hour’s litter picking. What a super place to walk, right in the middle of town!

In 1682 a boy called John Roberts was born in Casnewydd Bach, a tiny village in Pembrokeshire, West Wales. The boy grew and left home aged just 11, he is recorded as joining the British Royal Navy in the lowest of ranks aged 13.

In 1719, at 37, Roberts’ long lowly career in the Navy has been habitually unremarkable until one day the ship he is working aboard is captured. Reluctant to join the pirate captors, but less inclined towards being killed, Roberts is initiated into the crew which happens to be captained by another Welsh man, Howel Davies from Milford Haven.

Immediately hitting it off, Roberts and Davies speak Welsh to one another and Roberts’ excellent navigational skills, which were entirely overlooked by his former royal naval colleagues, become appreciated.

When Davies is killed in 1720, the very popular second in command is quickly voted in as the new captain and takes on the alias name Bartholemew Roberts.

By 1721 Bartholemew is wanted dead by several of the richest countries in the world. He is famed for his unprecedented success at intercepting Atlantic trading ships, fiercely enforcing his pirate code which ensures every crew member (a third of whom are black) has an equal share and vote, ensuring his men don’t mistreat women, and being unapologetically unique in terms of style and attitude for the time.

Bartholemew wears extravagant clothes and insists on music being played as his crew enter battle. Theatre and good morale is at the centre of everything.

"A merry life and a short one" aptly describes Barti's career which ends with a single pistol shot. After his death Bartholomew Roberts becomes known as the infamous Barti Ddu (Black Bart).

Barti Ddu was long constrained by poverty and the societal norms of the seventeen hundreds before his capture which ironically, ultimately freed him to be the individual he truly was.

Perhaps to celebrate piracy in its entireity isn't very ethical, but to celebrate one individual who made good of the hand he was dealt in gruesome and unforgiving times, and who carved a life where he could be his true self and share his wealth with those around him with mutual respect is something worth note.

Cheers to you John Roberts.

🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂The season is over and we are taking a break; possibly a very long one. We’ve hosted some wonderful guests and taken great pride in our continuous 5 star rating, but it’s become increasingly difficult to please everyone and I’m just not resilient enough. For now, this is the review from early august that I want to hold onto-

NEWS: Blue Lagoon temporarily closed to swimmers to protect seals and their pups

One of Pembrokeshire's most popular coastal attractions is to be temporarily closed to swimmers in a bid to protect breeding seals and their pups.

The National Trust will be closing the Blue Lagoon at Abereiddy on Saturday, September 21, and it will remain closed until the beginning of November. The date of its re-opening is yet to be decided.

The nearby beach at Traeth Llyfn will also be closed for the same period.

Visitors will still be able to watch the seals and their pups in their natural habitat from the Pembrokeshire Coast Path.

Anyone who may come across seals and their pups in other parts of Pembrokeshire is asked to avoid disturbing them and follow the Marine Code. This involves staying quiet, keeping at least 50 metres away from them, and never coming between a seal and her pup. Dogs must also be kept on leads at all times and kept away from the breeding areas.
