Picture the scene: Brancaster Beach. Spring 1944. Allied amphibious tanks are practising landings on the beach, which was chosen for the exercise because of the similarity of Brancaster’s soft sand to the beaches along the Normandy coast. The exercise was a success, giving the Combined Operations Assault Pilotage Parties (COPPs) confirmation that tanks could be deployed as part of the momentous operation that was to take place on this day in 1944.
