Cold Water Therapy Sessions
Winter Safety Guidelines (Rules, Session Changes & Advice)
As we head into winter the risks of entering the water increases therefore I'm adding rules for all participants to follow before attending their first session and making a few changes to the events themselves. Please ensure you follow the rules so we can all participate with minimal risk and focus solely on the benefits of cold water.
1. Check with your doctor that the activity is safe for you
2. If you have not previously been in cold water during this winter acclimatise with some cold showers in the preceding weeks
3. If you are feeling unwell (lowered immune system, cold/flu, or similar) then please do not attend
4. All sessions will involve an initial walk to the site (not necessarily direct) in order to warm up the body
5. All sessions will be a single dip of no longer than 10 minutes
6. All sessions will take place in shallower water
7. All sites will be accessible and within max 20 minutes walk from facilities/help
8. All sessions will take place in the early afternoon (safer travel condition etc.)
9. Sessions will aim to last around one hour
Additional advice
a) bring a hot drink
b) have warm clothes to change into after the session (and a towel)
c) wear neoprene gloves and socks/boots
d) wear a woolly hat
e) bring a sweet treat
f) use a dry robe (warm changing robe)
Remember too that these sessions offer peer support so there will always be others to look after you during the activity. I also have unparalleled knowledge of viable locations within the Lake District. Sites we will visit are carefully selected and particularly during these colder months a number of additional safety factors will be considered when planning a session.
An extra walk will be offered (late morning for around 2 hours) specifically as a means to have an extensive warm-up. This could involve visiting some waterfalls and the exact details will be determined based on participants. If any partners/family/friends would like to attend but not join the cold water therapy session then this will be possible.
