Excited to capture a video of one of the local beavers (last night, the date on the camera is wrong). We've had otter sightings this week too.

Thinking outside the box!

It seems to me that the challenges facing the UK Fish and Chip shop industry pale into insignificance when considering the plight of the Ukrainian people, however we can’t ignore the knock-on effects of this conflict.

With gas prices set to dramatically increase, utilities are under even more supply and price pressures as Russian gas gets turned off. The price of food is another huge concern. - I for one didn’t realise just how much we rely on both Russia and the Ukraine for our food.

I learnt last Friday that the price of Cod had increased 20% overnight. It is estimated that 60% of our Cod and Haddock is landed by Russian vessels and with these vessels banned from UK docks and fish processing plants boycotting their fish the supply of the UK’s favourite battered fish looks worrying.

I can’t blame the Russians for all the increase cost but those resulting from the conflict are in addition to those already faced by the industry.

There is no doubt that I must do something!

So, what am I going to do?

I will not sell Russian caught Cod! Our Cod is Norwegian and is responsibly and sustainably caught, Our Haddock is landed at Brixham and our Plaice is also sourced and landed locally.

In an attempt to minimise price increases, I am in the process of purchasing a substantial amount of Cod, before the price increase even further. In addition to this I am currently talking to John at Devon Quality Fish (our local fish merchant) about Cod alternatives of which there are several.

I hope that I will be offering locally caught fish at a similar price as is currently charged for Cod soon. Any such fish will be in addition to Cod and will be clearly advertised so customers know what fish is available.

We have forgotten the varieties of white fish available to use in the UK and if we can buy locally, support our local fishing industry, and minimise the need to increase prices then I think everybody can be a winner.

Fantastic feedback from our recent guests:
"We had a wonderful time at Sarah's place. The barn is absolutely beautiful - very nicely decorated, furnished and equipped. We went with our toddler, and the facilities for him were the best we have had in an AirBNB - a proper cot with bedding, highchair, books and lots of toys! We would love to come back, and have recommended to family. The wifi is also very good, and my husband was able to work remotely during our stay."

All set up for a young family. We now have a proper cot as well as a travel cot

With the arrival of summer we have seen increased footfall on the South West Coast Path so we thought perhaps you’d like to know what’s growing on the farm along the footpath. Elsewhere on the farm we’re also growing sweetcorn, pumpkins and squash, parsley, parsnips, beetroot, carrots, barley, cauliflowers, cabbage, sprouts, broccoli, kale, grass and more.

Between the footpath and the start of the crop all along the cliff path is land dedicated for rare flora and fauna. We are trying to support nature by encouraging the growth of rare plants species and providing a safe habitat for many rare birds, butterflies and other insects. Walking across or sitting in these areas could cause harm to ground nesting birds and rare natural plant life.

We would appreciate your help in protecting this wildlife haven and our crops by sticking to the footpath which follows the cliff edge, keeping all dogs on leads and cleaning up after your dogs.

We also have livestock on our farm (chickens, sheep, alpacas, and cattle) so keeping dogs on their lead is much appreciated to keep our animals safe.🙂
The winter feed for our animals is made from the summer grass and flowers; dog muck can be picked up with the crop at harvest and if eaten can be lethal.

Enjoy your walk, leave only footprints, and take away only memories 💚

The Barn

Sarah and Mark purchased the Barn with Hill Farm in 2013 with a view to converting it for a family member to live in. It forms part of our smallholding and family home. Sadly it never became a home, but we persevered and converted the barn into the beautiful 2 bedroom accommodation that stands today. The barn was originally built in 1891 and is a Mark Rolle barn. The conversion was finished in 2019. Mark was the architect for the design and has also had a real hands on input in decorating, tiling and kitchen fitting. Sarah has completed the interior design and sourced all of the furnishings and accessories.

You are welcome to book your stay directly through us, or the property can be found on www.homeaway.co.uk, www.holidaylettings.co.uk and www.airnbn.co.uk.

Sarah is managing the barn and Mark is now running an architectural practice from home. We look forward to welcoming you to our property.
