Lyn Brianne and Gwenffrwd-Dinas Nature Reserve in the Cambrian Mountains.

Drove up the road beyond Pumsaint the other day to take some time off and clear our heads with a short walk and chill out beside the reservoir. The walk around the mini mountain was a mixture between nice and easy and very up and down near enough scramble which kind of killed my knees, apparently there is a lower walk thats easier but we missed it.

Then only about 1/2 mile up the road is Lyn Brianne which was great, offering fantastic views. We wondered around for a bit and will do a walk from next time we go up there, there are picnic tables up there, plus public loos. This place is seriously in the middle of nowhere and when you look down the valleys the views go on for miles.

Whichever way you drive there is quite narrow and in places very narrow, but there were a couple of motorhomes/campervans up there so perfectly driveable. But having to pass a Motorhome on the return journey I would suggest people stick to the smaller versions or Campervans.

Recent visit to Dolaucothi Gold Mines. Well worth it, with two mine tours to choose from with both over/underground sections. We went on the Drift Mine Tour and the climb out was very interesting as a bit 'Indiana Jones' style. The tour guides are excellent with some interesting factoids.
I did take some video footage which I will try and put up as soon as can get some time to edit it.

The fields were cut for hay last Tuesday the 25th and last evening (Friday) Gareth came over to get the stuff baled up, which amounted to 21 large bales for the outer less good stuff (bedding) and 159 small bales of the good relatively w**d free good stuff for feed. As we just wanted chicken bedding we just had four large bales to ourselves, Gareth having the rest for his farm and cows up the road. Just in time as it rained last night.

Lignum Vitae wood Artefact

I know this is just a lump of wood that I found in the wheel-pit but I went to pick it up and it was a lot heavier than I thought, at 22kg with dimensions of only 550mm x 250mm x 135mm. When you tap it, it sounds more like a brick and it is very hard.

After a bit of research it turns out that it is Lignum Vitae a rare dense wood. The trees are indigenous to the Caribbean and the northern coast of South America (e.g., Colombia and Venezuela) and have been an important export crop to Europe since the beginning of the 16th century. The wood was once very important for applications requiring a material with its extraordinary combination of strength, toughness and density. Hence its probable use in the old mill.

You can just make out the outlines of an old bracket and what looks like a wooden bearing sleeve embedded into it.

Cors Caron Nature Reserve
Yesterday was a bright and sunny day, if a bit cold so we decided to take a break and go for a stroll around Cors Caron nature reserve, which is a vast area of wetland filling the broad valley of the River Teifi near Tregaron.

This is a brief summary of a trip to St Dogmaels on a Tuesday morning, in a search for some locally produced proper stoneground flour, from ‘Y Felin’ known for their fabulous unadulterated real flour, with no additives and not ‘processed’. We had been advised that the best time to visit was a Tuesday morning as there is Local Producers Market every week which was worth a visit, so off we toddled.
