These wee beasties used to be seen in the skies of Skye back in the Jurassic period. So much so that there are still traces of them in the North of the Island.

I don't suggest you do the whole 15 miles, but Sgurr na Stri is easily accessed at Camasurnary Bay, a mere 10 minute drive away.

The mountain is as good a he says (see an earlier post of my moonlight ascent this winter) and a visit to Sligachan is always a memorable day. Come stay.

Some listening for anyone considering tackling the Cullin ridge or specifically the Inaccessible Pinnacle or In Pinn as it's more affectionately known.

I tackled the In Pinn almost 20 years ago after the most glorious first time soloing the ridge one midsummer. I teamed up with two brothers who'd been following me for pretty much the whole day. Luckily, they had all the gear!

One of the most exhilarating climbs of UK mountaineering. Come stay.

First ascent of Sgurr na Stri was this morning by moonlight, but absolutely perfect conditions to watch the dawn come up and hit the Cullin ridge.

Anyone with a sense of adventure is going to love Skye.

We're having some beautifully sunny and dry weather in Skye at the moment. The winter light is soft and interesting at this time of year.

That said, Spring is just around the corner - a great time to visit as its the driest!

Looks like an abstract picture (to my mind) but its a snap of the seabed where I go to swim (which is opposite the cottage). Such a lovely thing to do on a regular basis.

Pretty clear water eh? Lots of different seaweed species but most importantly, its sandy which gives my (chilly) swim a slighly Carribbean look - all azure blues and greens.

Skye is such an elemental island!

It's impossible to avoid the REAL world here. Seasons, phases of the moon, night skies, auroras, weather, rain or in this case the wind! Gusts of 75mph ATM.

You cannot not feel very alive here.

So come stay, and recharge the batteries.

Fans of wild swimming / open water cold water swimming or plain old `swimming` will love a stay at Stone Cottage Skye.

There's a secluded cove 5 minutes walk from the cottage, which is sheltered with sandy, easy access and beautifully crystal clear water. Take it from me (having started swimming this year) even when there's snow on the ground (as was this particular day), the water is quite toasty!

I suspect that these are formed by features just below the ice - although I can't be certain. Maybe someone can help?

Skye in winter has a reduced colour palette but its no worse for that and has a beauty all of its own. Photo taken at Camasunary bay looking towards Sgurr na Stri, beautifully etched with a fresh covering of snow.

Fishing boat and winter storm:

If you are wondering the sort of view you get from the breakfast table, this was taken yesterday morning after a dusting of snow on Skye.

As the sun never gets above 10 degrees from the horizon at this time of year, the light is unbelievably soft and interesting.

Skye now boasts four separate whisky distilleries.. Each is distinctive yet quite quite different. They're within easy reach of the cottage.

My favourite has to be Raasay it's a wonderful blend of three unpeated malts and three peated malts. It's delicious. With a killer view of Skye from the distillery. Come stay, and go visit!

If you like the idea of gazing at the snow covered peaks and watch the weather roll in from Rhum and Eigg with a glass of wine or whisky in your hand, please get in touch. Hogmanay is NOW available.

Due to a sudden cancellation from some Swiss guests (through no fault of their own I should add) Hogmanay (New Year) is now free.

Also there is some flexibility to when you start the week (27th or 28th Dec).
