Did a little low alcohol bar crawl yesterday. With less than two weeks until race day and inspired by and I thought this was a good idea. I started and sampled two beers and then hopped on the train to .beer to sample their low alcohol taproom. We finished off . This morning I was able to clock 8 easy miles with not the slightest hint of a hangover.

London Marathon! Gotta love it, the beautiful street party that celebrates the impossible. It was my first marathon back in 2018. I had deferred from the year before and was not going to miss it. I was deep into my teacher training, had hardly trained and was ill the night before. The race obviously beat me up and I struggled across the line in 4:41 . Those racing today, you’ve got this, you’ve put the effort in, this is your victory lap.

What a weekend, I still can’t really believe it. A new PB OF 3.03.14 which is 1.39.00 faster than my last one. Also somehow managed a half marathon PB in the process. The support was amazing from , who made an amazing sign, and my parents. We stayed which was a lovely guest house and would recommend to anyone visiting Brighton.

Week 6 of marathon training done and it’s not been a great one. Shin pain led to bike sessions on top of stressful week at work. Managed 14 miles this weekend and shins didn’t feel worse during or after. So hopefully I can continue to build next week. May avoid speed work next week though.

Music Monday. This is where Pink Floyd's career was launched. Once upon a time, this was the spot of the UFO club at 31 Tottenham Court Road. Originally there was a music hall here, which used to attract African American jazz musicians in the 1920s. However, by the 60s it had become an Irish dance hall called the Blarney Club. In 1966 John Hopkins and Joe Boyd decided to found London's first Psychedelic club here by hiring it out on Friday nights. The UFO clubs was born. The club only lasted a couple of months until October 1967, when it moved to The Roundhouse in Camden Town.

Music Monday. This was once Bunjies Coffee House and Folk Cellar. It opened in 1954 and was named after the owners pet hamster. It was one of London's first folk clubs. A range of musicians have played here. Bob Dylan dropped by in 1962 and played a few songs. However he was kicked out when he insisted on playing more. Only headliners could play more. Other people to have played or visited the club include: Paul Simon, Jeff Buckley and Jarvis Cocker.

Music Venue Monday. This was once a Welsh Presbyterian Church, but in 1985 it was transformed into The Limelight. It was part of a high profile nightclub chain and was the only one in London. It was where Bob Geldof held his stag do in in 1986. People to play here include The Damned, Nick Cave, Rodger Daltery, George Michael and Boy George to name a few. The club became a sports bar in 2003 until it closed in 2010. There are currently plans to turn it into an arts centre.

Music Monday. The Apple Store in Covernt Garden was once a the Rock Garden music venue. It opened in 1976, in the basement of of the Bedford Chambers. The building had previously been occupied by fruit and veg merchants who worked at Covernt Garden Market. The venue was popular with punk and new wave artists. Talking Heads, Manic Street Preachers, The Smiths, U2 and The Police are all among those who played this basement venue. In 1980 the owners turned thenapace above the club into a restaurant, which became popular with tourists. The club closed in 2009 and is now one of flagship stores.

A Fun Fact Friday. The Barbican Estate. The water in the lakes are dyed green as they are too shallow, due to the Metropolitan line passing below. This gives the illusion that they are deeper than they actually are.
🚶‍♀️
The estate has been used in numerous adverts, films and TV shows too. For example, in the James Bond film Quantum of Solace, Skepta's music video for 'Shutdown' and in 'Luther'.
🚶‍♀️
It is a fine example of brutalist architecture and was finally completed in 1976. It was designed with a utopian vision, with outdoor and leisure facilties near by. Owened by the Cooperation of the City of London it was supposed to create council housing for the middle classes. The structure of walk ways and walls were designed to keep people out and even today walking around the barbican can seem eerily quite. This led to Simon Jenkins, in his book 'A Short History of London', referring to the land as a wate of space. However, I disagree with this sentiment.

Fun Fact Friday. St Bartholomews Hospital has a strange connection to London's music history. The hospital was founded in 1123 by Brother Rahere, who was an Augustine Friar at the nearby Priory Church of St Bartholomew the Great. To help raise funds for the hospital Rahere began London's first ever music festival, St Bartholomew's Fair in 1133. This started as a weekend of entertainment but had developed, by the 17th Century, to a two week festival of music, entertainment and debauchery. The hospital itself is the oldest hospital in Britain still providing medical services and is built on the site of the 12th century hospital. A number of the buildings date back to the 18th century.

Music Monday. The . This pub has undergone a number of changes but is still a surviving small music venue in Camden fighting the good fight. You can see amazing musicians in this intermate venue. However, it's not always been a welcoming boozer. During the 70s it was seen as one of the roughest in Camden and that's according Suggs from Madness. He remembers seeing people stumbling out of the pub with bottles in their faces. It was originally known as The Monarch with live music starting in 1993. There was no stage and bands would turn up and play in the corner of the room. However, soon the pub was refurbished and live music was moved upstairs and it soon reversed the poor reputation it had earnt in the previous decades. In 2000 it was renamed The Barfly and became a stable venue the London Scene. In 2016 it changed name again becoming the Camden Assembly.

Wandering Wednesday. At the weekend we had a walk around part of Sydenham Arts Festival. It's a great opportunity to explore artist studios and celebrate creativity in South London. The artist studios along Havelock Walk in Forest Hill had a great atmosphere. The last day of the festival is the 19th of September, so get down there before its too late.
