📍Angel of the North, Gateshead, North East 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Another weekend hill climb event 🚲 another drive out. I've driven past a few times but finally got the chance to get up close with the famed Angel of the North.

Made of 3,153 steel pieces, standing 20 metres tall, with a wingspan of 53 metres, this giant piece of public artwork was commissioned by Gateshead Council and completed in 1998.

I couldn't get over how close to the A1 it is, and it's so easy to get to. Maybe I should have visited sooner instead of driving past!

The Northern Lights were a paid actor 🌌

Last year, I received a bottle of Winter Edition 2023 and set it with my other bottles, waiting for the perfect idea for a photo 📷

I'd say it was worth waiting for last week's natural light show, especially the way this label really pops with the northern lights as a backdrop 💫🌌✨🥃

250 years ago, Henry Duncan was born near Dumfries, in the south of Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿✍🏼💰🪙🐾✝️

Known as the "Father of Savings Banks", Rev. Henry Duncan launched the world's first savings bank, after being appointed as a minister of the parish of Ruthwell.

Henry arrived to find a community which was very deprived, and started a new initiative to create a self-supporting and locally-based savings bank, which would provide services to the local community from the small cottage in the village of Ruthwell, between Annan and Dumfries.💰

He ran the bank, unpaid, and triggered a movement which was replicated across the country, eventually spreading to Europe, and eventually to North America.🪙

This man's talents and fame don't just lie with his work in the community, in 1818 he paid for the restoration of the stone Ruthwell Cross (regarded as one of the most important and earliest examples of early-Christian history in Scotland - another post is needed to cover that). The cross had been smashed by Presbyterians in 1642. ✝️

He also became the first person to create a scientific report on fossilised animal tracks, after discovering fossil footprints in sandstone in Dumfries and Galloway. 👣🐾🦕

On top of that, he also established several local newspapers, including the Dumfries and Galloway Courier and the Dumfries and Galloway Standard.📰🗞️

The list goes on.... He even met the one and only Robert Burns! ✍🏼🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

If you want to learn more about this well-accomplished man, and his place in Scotland's history, I'd highly recommend taking a tour of the cottage, which is now a museum. Check out their page "Henry Duncan Savings Banks Museum" and their website, of the same name.

Oh, and swipe for a museum cat (Agnes) ➡️➡️➡️🐈🐱

A nice wee treat for the cyclists taking part in the hill climb event close to a couple of weekends ago 🚲🍺

Recently, my weekends have consisted of tagging along to a few hill climb events, in the run up to the nationals at the end of the month.

I tend to take off and explore the area whilst my partner cycles (really fast) up a hill, and I go find some places to plonk down some bottles (and cans) as I try to get back into creating some consistent content.

Works for me - I get to go to places I wouldn't have otherwise been! I'll definitely be heading back to the brewery another day, so I can pop in when they're open and see what else they've got....🍻

So that's what I've been up to lately 🤷🏼‍♀️ the day job consists of a lot of screen time, hence my absence from here 😅😬

A bunch of distillery and brewery visits planned once I'm caught up on things, but here's a Proper Pale Ale (keeping to the cycling theme - kind of) for now ⛰️🚲🍺

The 1610 restaurant is so-called as the inn dates all the way back to the early 17th century, making it one of the oldest in the country.

Recently bought and sympathetically renovated by Prof David Thomson and Teresa Church (co-owners/founders of Annandale Distillery Group), the restaurant didn't take long to be listed within the Michelin Guide, and receive numerous prestigious culinary awards 🏅

Frequented by none other than Robert Burns himself, in the late 18th century, this historic inn is steeped in fine history and uplifted by a wonderful culinary and experience team. You can even take a tour of Burns' rooms, and dine at his original table for an extra special dining experience 🍽️🥂

They also host various events, special dining experiences and tastings, and are a Scotch Malt Whisky Society bar (please check them out - I'm unable to tag them!) 🥃🍷🍻🍸

Have you been here before? Is this somewhere for your bucket list? 📝

A wee while back, I had the pleasure of taking part in a highly anticipated whisky tasting with as part of some (obviously very essential) staff training, hosted in the Maltings Coffee Shop at 🥃💧

I stumbled across the Birkentree brand somewhere out in the wild (a whisky exhibition a few years ago?) and had been following them on socials for a while.

I'm a huge advocate for letting people experiment with how they enjoy their whisky, and the science behind the flavours at different ABVs and temperatures. Aside from water, I was a little scared to be adding anything else to my whisky, unless it was in cocktail form, but I feel like Birken Tree Highland Birch Water is a sensible alternative to spring water.

It's natural, it's Scottish, and it pairs incredibly well with Scotch whisky.

I can't wait to experiment more with combining these two magical liquids together 🥃💧🌳🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Happy World Whisky Day 🥃 (featuring one of my favourites)

Man O'Words (unpeated) Single Cask Single Malt Whisky, fully matured in an STR ex-Red Wine cask. To me, this one tastes like wine gums as it has incredibly fruity and sweet berry notes. 🍇🍷

This whisky is one of the first I bought when I started to understand the variety on the market for me. Although this is a firm favourite for me, it's a single cask bottling, which has advantages and disadvantages. One advantage is the quality and exclusivity of the bottling, and the lack of doctoring as there's no added water, vatting or additives. The disadvantage is always going to be consistency, but I've tried a few bottlings of the STR from Annandale, and there's never been a cask released that I didn't like!
There's always a risk in falling in love with a single cask whisky that the next bottling just won't be the same. Luckily, Annandale Distillery have been pretty on point with my favourite so far 🥃
