This isn't what I set out to do but life changed and I am glad it did!

When I first took the plunge into self-employment over 10 years ago I started out by owning my own estate agency, which was great, I had done it for 7 years for someone else but I was underappreciated and demoted when I had my first child, because apparently part timers can't be managers! So I thought fine I can do this myself and I did, but then I had my second child and trying to raise two children under 3 whilst working 40 plus hours a week is extremely hard and I landed myself in hospital.

It was at this point I thought what can I do that is flexible round the children but still working closely with what I love.......property. This is when someone suggested I become a virtual assistant working with property companies, so I did! And for the first year that is pretty much what I did but from the second year my role started to adapt, I started working with clients who owned holiday lets and serviced accommodation so I became more of a property manager than a VA, and from there I was then asked to do the marketing too which led on to social media and other forms of online marketing. Something I had never really done.

So even though I was at uni as well at this point training to be a psychologist I also put myself through every course I could find on social media too, and from there I migrated to become a social media and marketing manager (whilst also still managing properties), and here I am today loving what I do even though it wasn't the initial plan.

Lots can change in 10 years and my role, skills, knowledge, and experience certainly did. It wasn't the original dream but it certainly is now the dream, and I am so glad I took the plunge even when my partner and family all said I was mad to leave employment with two young children relying on me.

The best advice I can give is to believe in yourself even if no one else at the time does! With hard work and determination you will get there!

People ask me what was the point in training to be a psychologist if you don't use it......

But the fact is I use it everyday!

Psychology plays a crucial role in marketing and social media by helping brands understand consumer behaviour, motivations, and decision-making processes, and at its core, psychology allows marketers to tap into the emotions, needs, and desires of their target audience, making their messages more compelling and effective.

So for myself and my clients I use my psych knowledge to understand consumer behaviour, using psychological principles it helps me understand why people make certain choices. For example, the concept of social proof, where individuals look to others for guidance, is often used in social media by displaying customer testimonials, reviews, and user-generated content. This builds trust and influences potential customers to follow suit.

It also helps me decide what content to create such as emotion-driven content. I find people tend to engage with content that evokes strong emotions, and by leveraging psychological insights, I can create content that resonates emotionally—whether it’s joy, nostalgia, or empathy—leading to higher engagement rates and sharing on social media platforms.

I can also use behavioural targeting and personalisation because my psychology training helps me understand the unique preferences and pain points of different segments of mine or my clients audience. This knowledge allows for more personalised marketing strategies, such as targeted ads and customised content that speaks directly to individual needs and desires, improving the likelihood of conversion of that audience to a customer.

I have learnt about colour psychology and visual appeal, so I know colours and visual elements can evoke specific feelings and associations. For example, red can create a sense of urgency, while blue is often associated with trust and calm. Understanding these psychological effects allows me to design visuals and layouts that attract attention and elicit desired emotional responses on social media.

I can be pretty persuasive! By using psychological principles such as scarcity ("limited-time offer") and reciprocity ("free trial") these can be pretty powerful tools in crafting marketing messages that persuade and motivate action. These tactics play into human instincts and can significantly enhance the effectiveness of marketing campaigns.

I believe it is vital to create a community and engagement. On social media, building a sense of community and belonging is vital, and psychological insights into social identity and group dynamics help me create campaigns that foster a sense of connection among followers, encouraging them to engage more actively with mine, or my clients brand.

So when people say that basically my studies were a waste I don't believe so, I believe integrating psychology into marketing and social media strategies is not just relevant—it’s essential. It helps brands create deeper connections with their audience, drive engagement, and ultimately, achieve better business outcomes, and by understanding the human mind, I can can craft more impactful campaigns that resonate on a personal level, ensuring that their message is not only seen but also felt and acted upon.

I’m no expert on talking on a live or video, I literally am a Yorkshire girl who says it how it is, but the fear I felt everytime was in the pit of my stomach. So what did I do? I started doing live and video book reviews for my book club and bit by bit I got past the nausea and the thousands of erms. Content pillars are topics and themes around which you build your content, and using these pillars a great strategy for small businesses to use too.

The main 4 to think about using on social media are - Competitor differentiation, company values, champion a product, and industry challenges.

Company differentiation is what makes your product or service different from a competitor, such as the quality or the materials used, or the delivery of a specific service.

Company values are something you should know or figure out pretty early on. What do you stand for? What drives your company? 🚙

Champion a product....become known for that product or service, such as McDonalds and their Big Mac, or Apple and their IPhone, and so on. 🍔

Industry challenges are a great way to showcase what challenges your company are taking on, and what your doing to help, or give back. For example, are you using eco-friendly products, or processes to help with the climate crisis. 🌎

LinkedIn are now rolling out Company Page messaging to all Brands‼️

They initially launched this feature to just some company pages last June, but now they have confirmed that this week they will be rolling it out to all businesses. This will enable people to get in touch with your business instead. To enable (or disable) this you need to head to your inbox settings. Any admins of the page will be able to see messages that come to the company alongside their personal profile messages, and here they will also be able to assign different conversation topics to sort the messages, making them easier to manage! 📩

They have also said they are partnering with various third parties to facilitate the company messaging via social media management tools (such as Hootsuite) too! 🛠️

Today was a hard day!

After a lot of emotional stuff recently I think my head actually just decided to switch off. Normally Mondays are one of my busiest days as I have to deal with catching up on anything not picked up at the weekend but today I stepped back and slowed down. I got the vital stuff done for my clients but instead of hitting my to do list I put it away and went into my garden, and I just pottered around, not doing anything major as such but I knew if I pushed myself whilst feeling this way it would affect me more then just stepping away for a couple of hours.

Everyone gets overwhelm whether its mentally, emotionally, or physically at some point in their life but the key is to face it in the right way, for me it was shutting off from things for a couple of hours, for others it may be reading a book, heading to the beach, or simply laying and resting. What's this got to do with social media? Absolutely nothing but I am human and I think it is good to simply be myself sometimes 🙂

It’s a bit of an accolade I think when your client is coming to you to say they need to pay you more and not the other way round!

Yep I will accept that as a compliment! Damn sure I will! I work hard for my clients every day not just Monday to Friday, if they come to me with something urgent I will deal with it there and then if possible, if they need me to cover, or need advice, or have any other problems I am there if I can be.

Some people may say I am a slave to work for this but actually I don’t see it that way at all, I love what I do, and I love seeing my clients grow it’s almost like they are my companies, and that’s the way I approach all my work, as if they were mine because I wouldn’t expect any less if someone was working on or in my company.

There’s a few things I can never be accused of not being and that’s passionate, determined, and loyal to each and every client I have the pleasure of working with.

Anyway I’m ending the week on a high and after behaving all week on non alcoholic lager I am treating myself to a glass of wine and a movie once I tie up the weekends socials. What are you doing tonight? Work or pleasure?

Here are 5 tools you should consider when running your social media!

For content creation I always recommend 'Canva' because it is great to use for any level of experience in creation, plus it has lots of new AI features!

For scheduling this will depend on your budget but I use 'Sendible' which lets me have up to 30 accounts on it for around £80 a month, however there are free and cheaper ones out there.

I don't use a best time to post calculator anymore as I have enough stats from the years of doing this to know the best time for each of my clients but for anyone who doesn't know yet this is worth a try.

A link in bio tool is great as most people have more then one link that needs to be on there, I recommend Linktree.

The Instagram grid planner is a great way to really get creative with your Insta grid! Don't let anyone say you shouldn't make your profile look pretty 😀
