Many’s a time I wanted to stop the car and take this picture as it’s undoubtedly the most amazing view once you pass the Seven Sisters from Mayobridge.

For quite a small village we still have many public houses. This is a legacy dating back to the 18th Century where smugglers shared out their contraband here.
During the 18th & 19th Centuries illegal cargo ships stocked full of illicit packages of to***co, wine, spirits, leather, silk and spices docked at the foot of the Mourne Mountains in Newcastle. Smugglers then loaded ponies with these illegal products and trekked through the Mourne Mountains to Hilltown. Trade was so popular, and the route so widely used that a track was soon created by the hooves of the heavily laden ponies. This old smugglers track still exists today and is used as a popular walking route, aptly known as “ The Brandy Pad”

BOOZY BASE IN COUNTY DOWN!

Hilltown is one of the closest settlements to the main peaks of the Mourne Mountains. In 1835 it had a total of 21 houses, 12 of which were pubs! The smuggling of illicit liquor from the coast had become a local pastime and Hilltown was the favourite distribution point. Hic! 😄
