FREE Entry to your local attraction. The Papermaking Museum was set up in 2014 in part of Pen-y-Coe Press, to celebrate the ‘Papermaking Town’ history. Trustees had originally planned to house the Museum in Bank Mill, one of the original paper mills. Still, its present situation on the main street through Penicuik makes it more accessible to visitors. The Museum now occupies what used to be the garage of Pen-y-Coe Press, which is still home to the original Heidelberg letterpress machine, and a thriving stationery and printing shop. OPEN Times: Saturdays 1;00-3:30 p.m. Or by appointment for groups [email protected]

We’re lucky enough to have curlews, lapwings and skylarks nesting around us. One of the great delights is to sit in the bothy garden and listen to them call. You can avoid disturbing them by keeping your dog on the lead and stick to the paths 🙏😊

SOAC Breeding Season - Keeping to the paths, March – July

Not all birds nest in trees! Some of our rare local species such as lapwing, skylark and meadow pipit make their nests on the ground. Disturbance can cause eggs to be abandoned, making them vulnerable to predators and to the cold. For this reason, on the higher slopes it is helpful to stick to the paths and keep dogs on leads or close at heel during this time. These birds and their nests are well camouflaged, meaning we may be close by without even realising!

We had a different experience this week, putting on our glad rags for a day out at We even got invited into the parade ring to pick the best turned out horse! The racecourse is about 40 mins drive from the bothy, and you can combine it with a lovely coastal walk or explore the Honest Toun of Musselburgh 🐎
