Wishing everyone the best 2022! Let next year be filled with adventures, exploration, and enjoyment. And above all else mountains, a lot of mountains ⛰

There's a beauty in the simplicity of the colours in the winter hills. When your whole world turns black and white everything is smaller and more intimate. It feels at the same time wilder, such a mix of raw emotions!

So happy to have had our first winter day out on the mountains. In this view you can see Ben More (Crianlarich) from Sgiath Chuil. The conditions were perfect since we had clear skies for a good part of the trek before encountering some very heavy blozzards on the top of the hill 🏔

Beinn a'Ghlò is a massif of 3 mountains just off of Blair Atholl. It is the perfect mountain getaway for us who live in the east coast of Scotland and don't have a car. The train station of Blair Atholl is located just 2 hours away from Edinburgh and it is a direct train as well.

This route was my wife's first wildcamping trip in Scotland and we were so lucky with the weather and lack of midges!!

Beinn an Dothaidh is one of the hills that greet you when you come into Bridge of Orchy. It is special because it has 3 peaks and provides views of all the hills around it and the start of Rannoch Moor. If your lucky you will even see the beginning of Glencoe in the distance!

Beinn Achaladair is a gorgeous ridge on the edge of Rannoch Moor. The change of mountainous country to eerie flatness is an extremely unique sight in Scotland!

This time we wilcamped right next to Loch Lyon. This gave us some decent winds to keep the midges away as well as water to cook at night. The sand under our tents also formed the perfect soft floor to sleep comfortably at night 🏕

Loch Ericht sits in between the Ben Alder Estate and the Drumochter Estate, both regions can feel quite remote and pristine. Although when you run into the actual house of Ben Alder Estate you might think you are somewhere in some kind of fairytale 🧚‍♂️🏰

Culra bothy is the perfect spot for wildcamping. Surrounded by towering mountains and provided with a burn (the Scottish word for stream) there's nothing more I could've asked out of this location. As you can see, the clouds were very menacing at the time that I started my ascent to Ben Alder, which meant that that day has been one of the wettest days I've ever had in the hills... Always worth it at the end of the day though!

First views of the glen just in front of Ben Alder. There you can find Culra bothy, where I wildcamped. It is a beautiful green mountain hut that is closed at the moment due to asbestos. Couldn't ask for a better view for the end of the approach!

I took the high road on the approach to Culra bothy and it took me along a gorgeous and rarely frequented ridge called The Fara. There are no paths up there so after an hour of fighting through bracken I was rewarded with pristine hill views just to myself!

I was able to see a heed of over 50 deer galloping on the side of the mountain and the view of Ben Alder always looming under the clouds on the horizon. Also these are the best views of Loch Ericht I've ever seen!

I approached Ben Alder through Dalwhinnie. This is a gorgeous small town, which happens to be the highest settlement in all of Britain. Historically, it has been of great importance since it is the place where major glens (valleys) meet in the heart of the Grampian Mountains. Because of this, Dalwhinnie, became the meeting point of many cattle drovers and travellers!

Ben Alder is one of the most remote mountains in Scotland. It stands around 20Km (13mi) from Dalwhinnie or around 16Km (10mi) from Corrour Station.
What you see in the photo is one of the ridges that takes you up to the summit of this mountain. This specific one is called the Long Leachas and its a gorgeous line up the mountain with some quite exposed steps and easy scrambling. Great to get your head for heights back in after a long break!

Some of the best views in our 3-day walk in Knoydart were around the Carnoch ruins in Camusrory Estate. The huge, flat glen surrounded by towering peaks like Sgur na Ciche and Beinn an Aodain gives you a sense of the magnitude of Knoydart's wilderness.

Sourlies bothy is a dreamy place to spend the night in the Knoydart peninsula. It's view of Loch Nevis nestled in between the rugged peaks of the Scottish West Coast makes it one of my favourite bothies 🏕🏞

The first night in our Knoydart expedition we found the perfect spot for wildcamping after some hours of whacking through bracken fields. Nothong could be more epic than having Glen Pean as a backdrop to your temporary home!

The Knoydart peninsula is commonly known as "UK's Last Wilderness" and it certainly is! On the first day of our trek we approached the Rough Bounds of Knoydart through Glen Finnan and found some of the most idyllic scenery I've encountered in the Highlands!

Have you ever tried water straight from a mountain spring?

I think there's really nothing comparable to a refreshing long sip of mountain water on a hot summer day while backpacking. We're so fortunate to live in a country where there is water running everywhere out in the hills! On a side note, that's Carn Liath the first munro we climbed on our exped last week.

Beinn a'Ghlò is a massif comprising 3 munros in the South of the Cairngorms National Park. It has become a special one for me because last year I had to quit a 3-day expedition to climb all the munros around there but now I was able to go back and do it with my wife . It was her first munro and first time wildcamoing in Scotland!

Stuc an Lochain has been one of my favourite munros in the West Highlands. It's position in the heart of this mountain range creates a feeling of remoteness and wilderness that is overwhelming (in a good way). Also, who doesn't love a wee summit lochain??

Sir Walter Scott describes Glen Lyon as "the longest, loneliest, and loveliest glen in Scotland" and it certainly is! The sense of isolation and remoteness you get in this area is unparalleled... Definitely one of my favourite hikes so far.

The summit of Beinn a'Chroin has been one of the most interesting munros I have done. After a couple of scrambly moves, the long flat top featured three different peaks and two high lochains (mountain lagoons). The views all around were of nothing but mountains as far as the eye could see ⛰

Ben Vorlich in the Loch Earn area was my first munro of the season! A beautiful straightforward mountain that stands relatively close to Edinburgh. Can't express how happy I am to be able to be back hiking in the Highlands!
