This walk will give people the opportunity to see the history written in the stone left behind by the residents of the mountains and hillsides. From post medieval millstone production to how these hardy people had to scrape out a living in the beautiful but harsh environment. You will hear of the evictions of the tenants and the impact of the famine in the local area and see evidence of the ancient traditions of Booleying huts and the nomatic way of life that has only recently been discovered in the Mournes.
The walks generally last about 3.5-4.5 hours and suitable for all walkers from novice to the more experienced – these are not SAS endurance courses! Our aim is to leave you with a curiosity about the historical landscape.
We generally take group walks out twice a month. Private walks can be arranged, please contact us for more information.

The Mourne wall took 18-years to build and was constructed between 1904 and 1922 - walk in admiration of these hardy mountain men that were able to achieve something functional yet beautiful. (It was built to keep livestock from contaminating water supplies)

Discovering how the ancient Irish lived in the mountains.
I have heard stories of Booleying huts in and around the Deers Meadow almost all my life So a few years back we decided to try and locate these huts to get a better understanding of the nomadic lifestyle of the Irish who existed in this corner of Ireland. As always on these journeys of discovery we stumble across layers of history written in the stone. Such as the story Royal Irish Constabulary traveling to Hen Mountain for their yearly firearms training c1880s. We have discovered the block granite covered in pock marks similar to what you would expect if used for target practice!

A must see when visiting County Down Norn Iron! Mount Stewart is a lovely day out for the whole family (prams and wheelchair accessible throughout). We enjoyed exploring the house - getting a sneak peek into what it was like for the Londonderry family to live there. Hats off to Edith for the decor and impressive silver collection. To say the gardens are impressive would be an understatement. Recently voted in the top 10 gardens in the world. There are so many different areas to explore. Sitting in the formal gardens listening to the birds and admiring the many animal sculptures was the epitome of peace. We had a wonderful time in Wicklow exploring another fantastic corner of this wee island we call home. relaxing after a stroll in the hills at the local pub Glenmalure Lodge to a day learning a little bit more on a wild foraging course with Wicklow Wild Foods , from making acorn flour to identifying and showing respect to the dangers and poisons along our hedgerows of Hibernia From hemlock to foxglove and the numerous poisonous mushrooms, who knew our beautiful country could hold such dangers. Yet it's not all doom and gloom we also learnt about the wonderful health benefits of the everyday flora and fauna around us which has left us in awe of the humble nettle and unassuming dandelion. Then off we went for a personal tour of the Ulster Museum, Belfast
I have some very early & fond memories of this fantastic building ,where I have never been disappointed by the incredible exhibitions and artworks on display.
We finished off with a short stroll around botanic gardens, with a very tasty mango bubble tea in hand courtesy of ANiceSip at Belfast
