As an extension to my Languedoc tour business ( www.cathar-heritage-tours.co.uk ) this site was established to share my love of the region's rich history of the Cathar people in Languedoc. This is a pictoresque region and a broad range of local knowledge can be found on the " useful information" links page of the web site. The religous war between catholic crusaders and the small cathar community

was a shocking affair, a long and bloody conflict that some have called "the earliest form of ethnic cleansing"

I charge €280 for up to 4 persons for a full day tour in this amazing region with full explanation of places visited

Some of favourite photos of the people and landscape of the region can also be seen to hopefully draw you to visit the region and its treasures. I have also put a couple of word documents there from my own reading on the subject to provide a quick precis of its background and story

The inquisition highlights how barbaric the catholic church could be to protect its wealth and power !

The Cathar heresy was a major challenge to the Roman Catholic Church. It combined a tradition of itinerant preachers in the forests of France with a very ascetic quality. The Cathars rejected the Roman Catholic, the entire church structure. They said they were the only true Christians. They develope...

It is amazing how some try to rewrite history,by saying_ "It never happened" like the holocaust. We need to be honest about the abominal acts of humanity to admit our vulnerabillty !

They lived simple lives of austerity and abstinence and suffered horrifying deaths, cut down by marauding armies and burned at the stake as heretics — or so the legend goes.

the shrine of catharism in France !

Here is an example of the trebuchet used by the catholic army sent to crush the cathars seeking refuge in their perched castle hide-aways. They would aim the stones to break the walls for entry but often they would aim to destroy the wall close to the water well. ~Then just wait until thirst drove them out !

3 centuries after eliminating the Cathars, the catholics took on the protestants(hugenots) and laid seige to this lovely village Menerbes in Provence. There must be a better way to draw people to God than through massacres?

Click here to find out more about Ménerbes, one of the most beautiful hilltop villages of Provence situated in the Luberon region.

Just like the holocaust, there are those that suggest the Cathars did not exist, to get a bit of self publicity! Thankfully history has much documented evidence to prove both these events happened!

They lived simple lives of austerity and abstinence and suffered horrifying deaths, cut down by marauding armies and burned at the stake as heretics — or so the legend goes.
