๐๐ EU Passport Rules ๐๐
We understand that our clients have had many questions about passport rules since the UK left the EU. Below is a simplified explantion.
These new rules only apply to passports for travel to the European Union (EU), along with Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City.
However, these rules do not apply to travel to Ireland, as it has a separate travel agreement with the UK.
Different rules also apply to other destinations like Turkey.
Here are the two main EU passport rules to remember:
๐น RULE 1
Your UK passport must be no more than 10 years old when you enter the EU. Before 2018, renewed passports could have up to nine extra months from the previous one. However, this is no longer allowed. So make sure your passport is less than 10 years old on your arrival date. Childrenโs passports are renewed every 5 years, so they are not affected by this rule.
๐ท RULE 2
Your passport must be valid for at least another three months from the date you plan to leave the EU. Some EU countries require six months of validity, so itโs essential to check with the Foreign Office for country specific advice. The important thing here is that your passport has at least 3 months left until its expiry date, regardless of its age.
To sum it up, when travelling to the EU remember to check both the issue date (to ensure it is less than 10 years old) and the expiry date (to ensure it has at least three months left after your trip)
Cruises within the EU.
Many cruise lines, if not all, require six months of passport validity, even when cruising within the EU.
If you are unsure in anyway then use the GOV.UK https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice to check the passport entry requirements.
