A quick detour to Rough Bank on a trip back to see family. Diasppointed, but not surprised, to see very few Chalk-hill Blues, I suppose there just haven't been enough summer for them. This lovely male Common Blue was a delight to see though. He was balanced at the end of a long grass stem so shooting down the lenght of the stem gives this effect of him sitting on a perch emerging out of space or no-thingness.

White Storks were a ubiquitous sight in every town and village in Extremadura. These are some of the many nesting on the roofs and buildings of the historic town of Trujillo. On the retreat in May we spent a morning exploring this beautiful place - I, of course, spent far too much time looking at the Storks, Lesser Kestrels and Black Redstarts that call this place home.

The plan is to run another week in May 2026 in the countryside about 10 miles from Trujillo.

We were lucky enough to see some wonderful butterflies in Spain - this giant, it's wings make a noise as it flies past you!, is a Two-tailed Pasha, taken high on the borders of the Monfrague National Park.

Taken in a meadow just outside the Monfrague National Park in Extremadura, Spain. I was lucky enough to get much more detailed close-ups while I was away but there's something about this image that really touched me - the light, the colour etc. It was such a special place and it was a gift to have time there.

We're already looking at running another retreat in Spain for May 2026 - at an even better property just outside Trujillo. It will be stunning.

A Lammergeier in the Spanish Pyrennes. This was high in the mountains beyond Escuain - it was great to see these magnificent birds however it was the high alpine meadows that really surprised me.

We took the group to the most extraordinary wildflower in the Monfrague National Park - it was utterly breathtaking. I say extrordinary in my eyes because in Extremadura these swathes of flowers can go on for miles and miles in the cork and holm oak dehesa.

These delightful, robust birds will be returning to their breeding grounds in a month or so's time - after a 7 or more months at sea in the North Atlantic.

Our week on Iona, 10 - 17 May 2025, includes a day out to Staffa and the Treshinsh Isles where you'll see thousands of these charming little characters. Only 1 double room left so ideal for a couple.

As Essential Nature Yoga Retreats we're running a 7-night break in May, 11th to 18th, to Extremadura in Spain. One of Spains best kept secrets, it is a land of magical landscapes, rich in wildife, especially birds, and history.

During our stay, in a traditional Spanish country house, we will enjoy hatha yoga, meditation, chanting and yoga nidra as well as taking time to visit the breathtaking Monfrague National Park and the historic, and beautiful, town of Trujillo.

A male Marsh Harrier hunting over the Norfolk Coast. North Norfolk in thw winter is a place where nature let's you encounter it en-masse. Due to the extent of the salt marsh here there are hundreds of thousands of geese, waders and ducks present following migration routes that have been around for tens of thousands of years. It's a delight to be in the presence of these rhythms.

A Sanderling feeding along the shoreline at Heacham this afternoon. There was quite a bit of froth due to the wind and the waves which gave this wonderful effect in the sun.

Due to a relatively late cancellation I have the rare opportunity of a place for 1 person in a shared twin room on my Walsingham Retreat running from Thursday 24th to Sunday 27th November, weare blessed to stay in the grounds of The Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham. This is a very special part of the North Norfolk countryside where we take time to enjoy practice, stillness and a trip to the coast to take in the sea air and to witness the huge flocks of winter geese present at that time of year. The cost is £375 p/p and this includes all meals, teachings and accommodation. Please get in touch if you need any further information.
