Good morning all.

Just a quick update as we slowly glide out of the Summer season and into non-seasonal arrangements. There’s a quick mention regarding some interesting developments in the Fish and Chip industry too.

Firstly, the trials and tribulations of Cod.
Some of you may have been in the shop and realised that there was an absence of Cod… there’s good reason for this. When I buy our Fish, I am looking at reputable vessels that can catch at a depth that almost ensures the fish is meaty, flavoursome and fresh. Sadly, the last few weeks have seen the ship I use catching smaller catches than they would like, meaning good cod is extremely hard to come by. I bought some Cod from another vessel and in my opinion its just not good enough. Other shops may be selling it, and that’s great for the model that they work with, but I’m afraid I’m making a stand for quality and only selling Haddock for the time being (this could change at any moment). Both myself and most of the guys in the shop feel that Haddock is the superior fish anyway. So… watch this space and when Cod quality has been restored, I’ll message to let you all know.

Garry the Potato Man.
Garry is our potato farmer and he’s awesome. He’s allowed me to conduct a little bit of an experiment over the Summer, which is to trial a whole host of different potato varieties at different times of harvest. You may have noticed that the chips have sometimes been different from one time to the next. We’ve tried Casa Blanca, Sagitta, Ulster Prince, Eland, Acoustic, Maris Piper, Maris bard, Challenger and we’ve got more to come. This has helped me make some great decisions about how we move forward next year. Its also opened my eyes to the industry calling some varieties the “Chip Shop Chip”, where what they really mean is that it will sit in the chip box for an extended period of time or is more resistant to oxidation... I’ve found these types don’t have the taste that others have. What I want is a chip that tastes amazing and I’ll work with it in order to keep it and serve it. Garry uses barely any treatment on his potatoes whilst they are growing, which really means you’re getting proper, proper spuds. All this and they are grown just ten miles away as-the-crow-flies.

Our hours have changed from this week – please see attached image. We have decided to keep Tuesday evening as a regular thing for now 😊

Table service will be back in October and will follow a similar arrangement to what we had before. I’d bring it back sooner, but I just want to make sure the Summer craziness is over before we add another element to our service. For now, you can still order at the counter and eat in if a table is available.

I think that’s the important stuff anyway.

Afternoon everyone,

We are so lucky to have had such amazing weather over the last few days – lovely… but definitely cold!

Just a post to say that we are getting closer to Easter and seeing lots of people through the door – thank you! As a result and what was always intended, was to scale back the seafood offerings. We have therefore changed our menu to include some new amazing chippy style items while still keeping old favourites and our same great quality. This is a little sooner than I envisaged but I guess it’s a good problem to have. Please see our menu page for the current menu, or it is on our website at www.saltfishandchips.co.uk

Finally, I have included a review that I must admit had passed me by. Its really nice to be appreciated and know that all the effort we put in means something to someone. Whoever you are – thank you very much.
