You can find some fantastic outdoor sculpture all around the NC500 and we are lucky enough to have this enigmatic giant a short drive from us at Borgie Glen.
This is The Unknown (2012), by reknowned Scottish sculpter Kenny Hunter. The landscape within which The Unknown stands, is as much a part of the artwork as the iron sculpture itself. If you follow The Unknown's gaze across the landscape bear in mind this is a changing landscape, one which has been shaped by humans for at least 8,000 years.
From the iron of the sculpture, signifying Iron Age settlements to the desolute gaze across a landscape cleared of people for commercial gain in the 19th century, and the commercial forestry surrounding the sculpture today what will this giant witness in the future?
As Hunter has said "the journey to see the work is part of the experience, and you have to make an effort to see it."
You can find this enigmatic fellow in Borgie Glen, just off the A836 about 5 miles west of Bettyhill. Discover more about how the landscape has been shaped by human activity over time at Strathnaver Museum.
