I hold the Hill and Moorland Leader Award and I am the guide for the Ingram Valley Farm Safari in Northumberland National Park. At Footsteps, we lead guided walks in north Northumberland, UK, England's most northern county, the northern edge of which is also the English/Scottish Border. Our guided walks visit the Northumberland Coast, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with its miles of golden

sandy beaches and magical castles. We walk in the Northumberland National Park, an area of rolling hills, gentle valleys, high moorland and tranquil landscapes. Finally we walk in the Northumberland countryside too, small towns, villages and hamlets are scattered through the landscape and the county has many great stories to tell.

A brief pause on Hadrian's Wall Path National Trail as we walked from the Portgate to Heddon on the Wall today. A cool day, (always nice), showers and sunshine but with the wind always at our backs.

At the end of the day and on the approach to Steel Rigg on Hadrian's Wall Path National Trail, the way ahead was illuminated by a double rainbow. It moved eastwards with the rain and we watched it disappear over Sewingshields; magical moments for us all.

It’s Volunteers’ Week and a perfect time to celebrate the Conservation Team. We’ve reached a record number of volunteers, and engagement hours are more than double what they were this time last year.

Volunteers do nature recovery tasks, beach cleans, habitat
management, wildlife surveying, and practical conservation, as well as looking after parts of the Northumberland Coast Path and providing shorebird breeding season support to Space for Shorebirds .

Volunteer Sophie Barber says: “It’s a dream come true to be doing such varied activities in the name of conservation every day. Volunteering brings real positivity to my life and it’s a gift to be able to help this way.”

Keep an eye out for a deeper insight into what the Conservation Team does this week.

The Holy Island of Lindisfarne in is surrounded by a sea of pink in May. Thrift is in bloom all along the causeway, across the salt marshes and here on St. Cuthbert's Island. On our Footsteps in Northumberland guided walk yesterday, we took the opportunity to stand and stare amongst the flowers and soak up the beauty of Northumberland Coast National Landscape.

We were lucky to spot a female adder warming up on St. Cuthbert's Way in today. She wasn't going to move off the path, so we took our photos and moved quietly and quickly off her spot. Fantastic animals to see.

Stepping out on the Pilgrims Way to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne this evening on my first sunset walk in 2024. We didn't get that blazing red sky, but the light was soft, the company was joyful and the reflections just perfect. Another fine walk in the Northumberland Coast National Landscape

A cold day on the Pilgrims Way to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne today. With the wind in the North, we pushed on to the Island, although there was a bit of sunshine along the way. Coffee and cake of course, then a visit to St. Cuthbert's Island, the harbour and the lime kilns. We got the bus back, standing room only to the mainland. Great company and a very enjoyable day in the

On our walk to High Cup Nick in the North Pennines National Landscape, we saw: short eared owl, kestrel, dipper, goosander, golden plover, lapwing, curlew, grey lag goose, common sandpiper, oystercatcher, meadow pipit, wheatear and redshank. All in good numbers apart from the sandpiper and wheatear, of which we saw just one. This is an amazing place to see birds, it's a busy time of year with the breeding season just around the corner, although what they are thinking about the weather is anyone's guess. The photo is the overflow at Cowgreen Reservoir, there's a lot of water out there!

Today, I'm in the North Pennines and for the next two days as well. Paul and I headed up the Miners Track aiming to summit Cross Fell, we reached Gregs Hut, but it started to snow and the wind chill higher up was suggesting -8C so we turned around and left Cross Fell for another day. Rain all day, windy all day and wet underfoot, like much of the North as far as I can see. Highlights, curlew and lapwing on the moors and occasionally when the cloud lifted, some great views as well. The Hostel in Alston is a delight I have to add.

Our Story

Footsteps in Northumberland is an Award winning guided walks and outdoor pursuits business, picking up the Silver Award in the Experience of the Year category at the 2020 North East England Tourism Awards. At Footsteps, we lead guided walks in Northumberland, UK, England's most northern county, the northern edge of which is also the English/Scottish Border. To the south is Hadrian’s Wall, the Northern Frontier of the Roman Empire built in AD 122.

Northumberland has layers of history, from the prehistoric Bronze and Iron Ages, through the Roman occupation, the arrival of the Anglo-Saxons and right up to the present day. We have wildlife in abundance, grey seals, birds, butterflies and lots of wildflowers too.

Our guided walks visit the Northumberland Coast, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with its miles of golden sandy beaches and magical castles. We walk in the Northumberland National Park, an area of rolling hills, gentle valleys, high moorland and tranquil landscapes. Finally we walk in the Northumberland countryside too, small towns, villages and hamlets are scattered through the landscape and the county has many great stories to tell. So join us at Footsteps for some excellent walking in this remarkable place.
