Millbeck Cottage Millbeck Cottage is a charming grade II listed cottage, once owned by Lord Tollemache. Rowantree Cottage is the quintessential romantic retreat.

Brimming with charm and character this adorable detached thatched Grade 2 listed cottage dates back to the 1880's. Beautifully renovated to a superior standard it provides a unique hideaway for couples seeking stylish and quirky accommodation. Immaculately presented throughout with so much thought, care and attention to the finer details this property is idyllic! With its lovely exposed beams the

living area has a feature open fireplace as its focal point; relaxing to snuggle in front of and gaze into the dancing flames after a day exploring the stunning open countryside that surrounds Rowantree Cottage. The galley kitchen is very well equipped and both bedrooms are beautifully coordinated. A fresh contemporary bathroom completes the interior. To the rear of the cottage is an enchanting terraced patio garden; fully enclosed to provide a haven for children and dogs at play whilst dining alfresco. Rowantree Cottage nestles peacefully in the picture postcard village of Kirk Yetholm located within the wonderful Scottish Borders. Yetholm actually consists of two villages - Kirk Yetholm and Town Yetholm straddling the River Bowmont and nestled at the foot of the Cheviot Hills. Rowantree Cottage offers the quintessential rural hide away for couples seeking stylish accommodation surrounded by stunning rural vistas and offers a superb base to explore both the many historic border 'toons' across Southern Scotland as well as North Northumberland too.

So, can finally reveal that our next venture is this little beauty! Nestled at the foot of the Peckforton Hills in Cheshire - another Grade II listed gem.

Hope to welcome guests in the next couple of months once we have worked our magic on it. A warm welcome awaits!

We will be listing on Cottages.Com shortly and a new website and page are under construction.

So, 2022 has been an interesting one and the end of this year sees the end of our reign as owners of Rowantree. It is with great sadness that we spend our last week at the cottage as we prepare to close the doors for the last time as owners. We have absolutely loved our years owning the cottage and making memories for hundreds and hundreds of our guests.

Rowantree is a magical place and will always have a special place in our hearts. Other opportunities, however, have presented
themselves and it is time for another couple
to make their mark. We realise that it’s a little sudden, and for that we apologise, it took us by surprise too.

We do hope that you will continue to support the new owners who are continuing Rowantree Cottage as a holiday let.

We will be closing this page down shortly so until then - it’s over and out.

Thank you for your custom and friendship throughout the years. Much love, Audrey, Adam & Zac ### 😘

Excited to see the turf ridge go on !!
Also, if anyone is wondering why the back looks different to the front elevation - that’s because the front is water reed and the back is straw. This was a condition of Scottish Heritage - it must be preserved like this.
Thatch cottages are so pretty 🤩 and we are delighted to maintain this one!

So the re-thatching is underway - very skilled process.

We apologise for having to close down for the month of September. However, we have good reason for this............ we are having the roof rethatched by North West Thatchers w/c 19th September.

Scotland has a long tradition of using thatch, and in some parts of the country the local traditions of thatching continued until the beginning of the 20th century. However, since then, thatched buildings have largely disappeared from the rural landscape in many parts of Scotland. Thatch tends to be locally distinctive, with many variations of materials and vernacular traditions found even in relatively small geographical areas. Materials found for thatching roofs in Scotland include oat and barley straw, rye, reed, heather, bracken, broom, marram grass (grown on sand dunes) and eel grass (a type of marine grass). In fact over 20 different types
of thatching materials are identified in Historic Scotland TAN 4, Thatch and Thatching Techniques: a guide to conserving
Scottish thatching traditions. Traditionally sourced from whatever was found to hand, thatch is also one of the most harmonious roofing materials, blending naturally into the surrounding landscape from which it is taken. Due to its perishable nature, a traditional Scottish thatched roof will rapidly deteriorate unless it is regularly maintained. Since 1998 Historic Environment Scotland has
supported owners of thatched buildings through the Thatched Buildings Maintenance Grant Scheme, which has enabled
many thatched buildings to be repaired and kept in use. We are very lucky to be benefitting from this scheme.

A photographic survey of thatched buildings in Scotland, surveyed between May 2014 and August 2015 by Zoe Herbert (SPAB Scotland Officer), on behalf of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings identified us as one of 305 properties in Scotland of great historical importance. We must uphold Scotland's rich thatching heritage.

We will be documenting the work and will pop photos on here to show progress. We are all crossing our fingers for good weather!
