World record attempt at Trefranck Farm, 7th August
We have an exciting event coming up at Trefranck Farm in St Clether by kind permission of Pip and Matt Smith. Una Cameron is going for a 9 hour women's solo strongwool ewe shearing World Record Attempt. The event will take place on 7 August 2024 and the public are welcome.
Una's record will be the sixth shearing World Record to take place at Trefranck farm.
Una will be attempting to break the current 9 hour women's world shearing record of 458 strongwool ewes currently held by Sacha Bond.
Introducing Una
Una Cameron: professional sheep shearer of three decades, and 51 years young. A true inspiration and stalwart of shearing.
Una’s shearing career began in 1995 and since then she has travelled the world following the shearing seasons. She runs her own shearing contracting business in the Scottish Borders, where she lives. Una has done 21 seasons in New Zealand and several in Norway and Australia. For the past 20 years Una has shorn competitively in the open grade, the highest level attainable in competitions. She is the only woman in the UK ever to do so. Una will be the first Scottish woman to attempt a sheep shearing record.
Una has been training since last summer with this record in mind. She spent this past winter shearing in New Zealand, and has busy since shearing with Matt and also on her own run in Scotland, in preparation for the big day in August. Una’s team will be behind her every step of the way and are confident this record attempt will be successful.
Strongwool ewes means in this case that Una will be shearing adult romneys, which must have at least 3kg of wool each to be of world record standard. There are a huge amount of rules set out and governed by the World Sheep Shearing Records Society. International judges will be flying over, their will be 4 judges on the day to scrutinise the quality of Una's work and an animal welfare officer will also be in charge of making sure animal welfare is top priority.
Like any standard (In Australia and New Zealand) shearing day, Una's 9 hour day will start at 5am and comprise separate shearing 'runs'- 5 in total. The first being 2 hours long and each run subsequently lasting 1hour 45 minutes, each separated by half hour or 1 hour breaks finishing at 5pm.
On record day we are running a charity raffle and live auction full of some pretty special prizes, all proceeds to Blood Cancer UK and St Luke's Hospice Plymouth.
Una has chosen these two charities as they mean a lot to herself and the team. In memory of shearer and shearing judge, Alan Kennedy. Also of Margaret Pyke, wife of Trefranck Farm's all round loyal worker, Margaret sadly passed away last year.
We have also set up a GoFundMe page. From there all proceeds will be split 50/50 between the two charities.
There will be refreshments for sale on the day and money raised going to Friends of Altarnun School.
This record, like all others, wouldn't be possible without generous sponsorship, we would like to thank them all.
Please spread the word and come along and cheer her on.
However the event will be live-streamed if you're keen to watch and unable to come, the link will be posted on Una's 9 hour shearing world record page.
Sun Sun Sun all the way.

Trees out in full leaf now, and the woods looking amazing
So good to see the sun out at last, and the trees starting to come out, but look which is first the Oak tree or the Ash tree, side by side, like they say Oak before the Ash hardly get a splash. Ash before he Oak your in for a some, so let’s see what will happen this year.
Thank goodness it has stopped raining had a work day at meadow sweet cottage. Filling pot holes along the drive way, cutting the lawn for the first time this year and gardening. Good job done.
