Ahh simple pleasures! After a busy week, spending time on the river can be the best way to unwind.
This stretch of the River Rother lies where East Sussex meets Kent between Northiam and Newenden and we often walk the dogs and take our kayaks out here. In one direction the river will lead you to Bodiam Castle and the other, all the way to Rye and out to the sea.
There is nothing quite like the sense of calm spending time on the river brings, watching the swans and their newly hatched cygnets, and also lambs and cows grazing alongside.

If you're staying with us in one of our cottages in Rye then the river here is just a 15 minute drive away.

Kayaks, rowing boats, paddle boards and canoes are all available to hire on this stretch of river from Bodiam Boating Station - it is understandably popular so booking ahead is recommended! They also have the most amazing riverside cafe here - Lime Wharf Cafe with delicious food served daily and BBQ's with live music at weekends during the summer. There's a definite chilled vibe here and when the sun is shining we guarantee you won't want to be anywhere else!

Visiting the famous Rye Pottery in the heart of of Rye, East Sussex, established originally as a brickworks as far back as 1793, Rye Pottery is now much celebrated across the globe with early works featuring in the British Museum and the V&A.
The company was re-opened after World War II by two London sculptor/potters - the Cole Brothers and with their cutting edge designs and techniques they transformed the business into the renowned British ceramics brand it is today.

Now run by the third generation of the Cole Family, their pieces are highly collectable and a visit to this Sussex showroom is the only place to explore the full collection from contemporary home and tableware to characters from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales or the 1066 story.

You will also discover a selection on one-offs, samples and “seconds" only available to buy from this showroom.

A fantastic place to visit where you can watch expert decorators painting while you are in the shop and buy yourself a wonderful souvenir of your trip to Rye.

🧡Rye Harbour's iconic Red Roof Hut is
much loved by both locals and visitors and we've all stopped to take photos of that bright red roof against the ever changing skies of this wild and beautiful place.
Standing where the river meets the sea with breathtaking panoramic views, it marks the start of the many walking trails exploring the salt marshes, shingle beaches and freshwater pools which in turn provide unique habitats for a diverse array of wildlife. With over 300 species of birds recorded here, Rye Harbour is also a birdwatching haven and a visit to one the many birdwatching hides is a must!
We'd also recommend a visit to the fabulous Discovery Centre where you can learn more about the rich history of Rye Harbour - once a vital trading post, and also learn just how dramatically this stretch of coastline has changed over the centuries! There is also much to learn about the importance of conservation and environmental protection and the on-going work to protect this unique and ecologically significant area.

We’d recommend trying out an e-bike too from the lovely people at Rye Bay E-bikes too! So much fun and that little extra boost from the battery is fantastic!

Finally, let's not forget lots of tasty snacks and coffee with complimentary binoculars too!
