What were we watching? Any guesses, you can hear it singing.
Greyhen
A surprise to find this rather inquisitive Greyhen today !
Superb last day of our Short Break, starting at dawn to see a local Black Grouse lek. Two rather forlorn looking males were soon joined by six others and the dancing began! It wasn’t long before a female appeared attracted by the spectacle. Red Grouse displaying across the moor and the seep of the first Meadow Pipits overhead. A drive round a local loch had newly arrived Redshanks along the shoreline just feet away, Goldeneyes and a surprise Crossbill perched in a roadside pine.
Heading up to the coast, the light was fantastic, Velvet and Common Scoters, Long-tailed Ducks, Eiders and on the shoreline we even managed to read a few rings on birds amongst a large flock of c300 Knot. Local feeders provided great views of Tree Sparrows and Yellowhammers, and on the nearby estuary we added Bar-tailed Godwits, flocks of Teal Wigeon as well as the first Lessser Black-backed Gulls of the year. Over 80 species for the trip, with some great weather thrown in too.
We still have one place left on our April Short Break!

Lochindorb
A tranquil Lochindorb this morning, Song Thrush echoing over the water on the final day of our Short Break. www.highlandnature.co.uk
Tawny Owl
Spot the Tawny Owl ! Shortly afterwards a Goshawk flew over at tree top height, White-tailed Eagle flushing grouse on the moors, and a very confiding Mountain Hare. Ending the day feeding a flock of Snow Buntings on Cairngorm.
Challenging conditions to find the Great Grey Shrike today!
Snow Buntings, Cairngorm.
As it says on the can….Snow Buntings.
Anagach Woods
A stroll through Anagach Woods, Grantown.
So many photos but just listen to them.
The Storm.
Incredible sea on the east coast during Storm Babete. This pushed numbers of Grey Phalaropes and Storm Petrels close inshore, seen all along the coastline.
Whooper Swans
Amazing to watch a flock of migrating Whooper Swans resting on a rough sea off Nairn yesterday.
