This long-term research for peatland waders reveals some interesting trends which are likely to be due to a range of factors including, land use, prey availability and climate change. We are working to help the birds and their breeding habitat through support for peatland restoration across the Flow Country and beyond.

🐦🌲 Saturday Star Species: Crested Tit! 🌿✨

It's time to meet one of the most iconic species in Abernethy Forest – the Crested Tit!

These punk-rockers of the bird world, with their distinctive hairdos and trilling calls, are always a treat to spot as they work their way through the pines.

Despite being widespread across Europe, in the UK, Crested T**s can only be found in northern Scotland, primarily in ancient Caledonian Pine Forests like Abernethy. As they move through the trees, they feed on pine seeds and small invertebrates. They also visit bird feeders, and the feeders around the Loch Garten Nature Centre can be a great place to spot them, especially during the colder months.

Deadwood is vitally important for Crested T**s. Not only does it support a diverse community of insects and other invertebrates, which are a primary food source for Crested T**s, but it is also where they excavate their nests!

Have you spotted a Crested Tit before? We’d love to hear your stories or see your photos of these charming birds!

Old and local names for birds are fascinating, anyone any more interesting examples?

In Scots, Ring Ouzels can be known as Hill-Chacks, Mountain Blackbirds, or Rock Starlings.

“Ouzel” is an Old English word for Blackbird, and the latin name Turdus torquatus refers to the white breast band of a male Ring Ouzel as “torques” means collar.

This magnificent summer visitor was captured by our camera trap two years ago today on the uplands of RSPB Scotland's Abernethy Reserve.

The collection of Scots names was taken from local writer and artist Amanda Thomson’s “A Scots Dictionary of Nature.”

Visitors to the Cairngorms National Park can now learn about nature and how they can save wildlife following the completion of Scotland’s Wildlife Discovery Centre. Based at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland’s (RZSS) Highland Wildlife Park, the £6.5 million project comprises three new buildings, an ambitious community outreach programme and a biodiversity action plan to help protect native species.
