We’re fortunate on Mull to have a number of haul-out sites where seals can be viewed from a distance. However, seals on sites closer to shore can be easily spooked.

As well as causing stress, disturbing seals into the water costs them valuable energy which can lead to negative impacts on their health.

If you are walking on a shore path, or are kayaking or paddle-boarding, do keep your distance from any seals to avoid disturbance. Seals are particularly sensitive to dogs - even when the dog is on a lead - so you may need to consider changing your route if you see signs of agitation.

Signs to look for include a seal popping its head up to look in your direction, followed by a shifting about as they become increasingly uncomfortable at your presence.

If you are coming to Mull and hoping to see some otters and other wildlife, then have a look at our Wildlife Watching Tips video.

Better yet, visit the VisitScotland office at Craignure and ask for advice on the island's specialist wildlife tour operators.

Always remember to give any wild animal the space it needs. Keep your distance (out of sight, if possible), and avoid blocking its route or following it.

If you're planning to camp in Mull's wild places, remember to follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code and leave no trace.

Bring a stove or raised fire pit rather than lighting an open fire. If you feel you must light a fire, do it where it won't damage grass or other vegetation, and away from wildlife and farm animals.

***ADVICE FOR DRONE USERS***

Mull looks great from all angles - especially at ground level - so do consider whether that aerial shot is really needed.

Unfortunately, we've received reports of irresponsible drone use scaring a pet dog resulting in an injury. The drone was being used in an area frequented by otters and coastal birds. If a pet, habituated to the sounds of human activity, can be affected, it's pretty clear that wildlife will be equally disturbed - if not moreso.

Remember, the UK Civil Aviation Authority's Drone Code clearly states:

'Do not fly where you’ll disturb or endanger animals and wildlife.'

For more information on where you can and can't fly - including restrictions around people, animals and buildings - see: https://register-drones.caa.co.uk/drone-code/where-you-can-fly
