Totus Challenge Complete!
Between 8th and 10th September 2022, Totus undertook their most gruelling challenge yet, with a team of runners and a team of walkers covering 80 miles over 3 days from Lands End to Padstow, along some of the most brutal coast path that Cornwall has to offer.
Thursday – Day 1 of the challenge was met with trepidation. None of the group, walkers, or runners, had any experience of this section of coast path and the fear of the unknown was palpable. The weather was not on our side….
30mph winds and sideways rain met us and our support crew from West Cornwall Search and Rescue at Lands End. After a quick photo shoot and some words of encouragement, we set off. Our hope was to catch the walking group before the finish line. They had set off 2 ½ hours previously and had made good progress despite the weather.
The terrain underfoot was not kind and at one point we were climbing over rocks to follow the path, which was not in our training plan! The weather, mud and rocks were relentless. We had several checkpoints along the route, meeting with our support crew for water top ups, refuelling and some much-needed sock changes. We finally caught up with the walkers at mile 20, checked in to make sure everyone was okay and swapped stories. The finish was not far away, with the terrain easing and the weather kinder we pushed on to the finish. Day 2 was going to be tough!
Friday – Day 2 after a good night’s rest and plenty of carbs we were ready to tackle day 2. This was a section that we had trained on, so our tired legs knew what was coming. Our route was full of beach, dunes, hills, and steps but luckily the weather was a lot drier despite the bitterly cold wind. Our finish point for the day was Perranporth – 26 miles away, we were going to have to dig deep. The views were absolutely spectacular and remembering why we were doing this challenge gave us a boost when things got tough. We had to say goodbye to Dave at mile 17 as he had suffered a knee injury but seeing him at the end with pasties was a very welcome sight!
Saturday – Day 3 we had made it to the final day! We all set off in good spirits on a beautiful sunny day. The first part of our run took us across Perranporth beach with almost three miles of soft golden sand to wake the legs up as we approached Newquay. We had excellent support from the Watergate Bay Hotel who fed and watered us at the halfway point which gave us plenty of energy to make the final push to the finish. We were lucky enough to catch up with the walkers with about 1 mile to go so it was lovely to be able to cross the finish line together.
An excellent effort from everyone involved with nearly £3,000 raised for West Cornwall Search and Rescue.
Well done Team Totus!
