We hope you will enjoy your stay at Appuldurcombe Farm it is situated in beautiful countryside with direct access to many walking and cycling trails - details and maps are all available in the properties, as well as being in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty the ‘extended property’ is seeped with history.
Appuldurcombe began as a priory in 1100, it became a convent, then the Elizabethan home of the Leigh family. The large Tudor mansion was bequeathed to Sir Robert Worsley in 1690 with construction of the present Appuldurcombe House starting in 1702 and during the 1770’s was substantially extended by his great-nephew Sir Richard Worsley, 7th Baronet of Appuldurcombe, in the 1780’s the celebrated landscape designer ‘Capability’ Brown enhanced the rolling grounds - still noticeable today - Sir Richard married 17 year old Seymour Dorothy Fleming however the marriage was short-lived after a scandalous court case with one of his wife’s rumoured 27 lovers, he died in 1805 and the house passed to his niece who married Charles Anderson-Pelham (Later Earl of Yarborough), the founder of the Royal Yacht Squadron he retained the property as a convenient base for his sailing activities! In 1855 the estate was sold - an unsuccessful business venture ran Appuldurcombe as a hotel, afterwards it was leased as Dr Pound’s Academy for young gentlemen. The house was inhabited in the early 20th century by 100 Benedictine monks prior to them settling at Quarr Abbey. Troops were billeted in the house during both world wars and was bombed in 1943 - the resulting hole in the roof was left unrepaired and much of the roof and interiors were removed. Once the grandest house on the Isle of Wight, a masterpiece of English Baroque architecture but now only the graceful shell is managed by English Heritage.
Appuldurcombe Farm owned by ourselves sits to the north of the house with the land extending east, north and westwards ‘up the hill’ to the Worsley Monument - with the obelisk it is possibly the highest point of the Isle of Wight. The farm is a 200 acre livestock farm, generally sheep grazing and Worsley Down (part of the farm) enjoys panoramic views over the Isle of Wight and mainland coast from Dorset through Hampshire to Sussex. The four properties available to let include the original Farm House (sleeps 10 in 5 bedrooms, with 3 bathrooms on the first floor and ‘4’ reception rooms and kitchen on the ground floor) - from the Drawing Room of the Farm House the view extends to Sandown, Whitecliff and round to Bembridge Harbour - Willow Cottage adjoins the Farm House (but separate - sleeps 2 in one double room with bathroom on first floor and open plan living room on the ground floor) The Old Dairy (sleeps 12 in 6 bedrooms with large reception areas, the Ox House (sleeps 6 in 4 bedrooms with reception rooms and a private walled courtyard garden) All the properties are fitted with ‘log burners’ and are fully equipped to make your holiday one to remember.
To the north of our farm is the Grade II listed Freemantle Gate which is now a scheduled monument. Designed in the eighteenth Century by the architect James Wyatt, the gates are very typical of this era and their grand design was intended to highlight the past glories of the park.
