Meet the latest arrivals at the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre in Malawi 😻
These three servals were rescued from the illegal wildlife trade. All three have had a rough start to life, but according to the sanctuary, they are responding well to a good diet and their specialist care 👏
They’ve been on a feeding schedule since arrival but have just started transitioning to solids 🍴
They’ll remain in the sanctuary’s care until they’re ready to be released back into the wild, where they belong 🙌

Over the course of 2023, many hard-working volunteers joined the Samboja Lestari Orangutan Project and helped to repair and renovate one of the island sanctuaries.
By supporting the BOS Foundation (which operates under an MOU with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry) our collective goal was to return this space to a habitable environment for its lucky new homeowners, Anih and Chris John!
In this video, Volunteer Coordinator Kate talks us through the process of their release 🦧

Without the incredible work from the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF), the success of these releases would not have been possible 👏

The monitoring team on one of the Game Reserves at the Zululand Wildlife Conservation Project in South Africa was lucky enough to see these Black-Backed Jackal pups emerging from their den this week 🥰
Black-backed jackals are very selective of their mating partner as they are monogamous, meaning they will mate for life. The pairs will find food together and build shelter having a very strong social unit. The gestation period will last between 60 to 65 days with the mating period generally being from May to August.
Black-backed jackals usually use abandoned aardvark burrows as dens and give birth to 3 to 6 pups. The males will provide them with food while the females are constantly with the pups protecting them for their first weeks of life.
When the pups are about a month old, their mother will feed them by regurgitating food. The pups will be weaned when they are around three months old. They will then start to leave their parents after three to five months, with some of the pups staying to help raise the next litter.

Meet Puck 💚 This baby pangolin was rescued from traffickers, arriving at the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre at just a few days old.
Puck arrived with his mother but given the stress of her time in the illegal wildlife trade, she stopped producing milk. The sanctuary made the difficult decision to separate the mother and baby so they could tailor their care.
Puck’s mum was understandably stressed by humans, but luckily they were able to release her back into the wild almost immediately.
Puck arrived with his umbilical stump still attached, which means he was probably born while he and his mother were being held by traffickers. Puck is the smallest pangolin they have ever received, his scales were still soft on arrival. He’ll be in their care for at least a year before they can release him back into the wild. But first, they need to get him through his first few months of life 🤞
Thank you to the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre for giving pangolins like Puck another chance at life in the wild 👏

This week Keisha, one of the rhinos at the SanWild Sanctuary & Reserve, worryingly went missing 😰
Volunteers had the opportunity to scout the area in a helicopter to find her 🚁 Luckily Keisha was found safely 👏
During the flight, volunteers were also able to monitor elephant numbers from the sky in aid of ongoing research for the elephant management plan 🐘

Today is World Rhino Day 🦏 Meet Thandi and her calf Zolani at the Kariega ‘Big 5’ Conservation Project ❤️ Thandi is a female white rhino who miraculously survived a brutal poaching attack in March 2012. Thandi’s recovery was a long process involving pioneering skin grafts to her face and numerous operations. What’s even more miraculous is that Thandi has recently given birth to her 5th offspring! Surviving such a brutal attack has encouraged many people around the world to get involved in rhino conservation. Not only that, Thandi has given us the opportunity to speak about the brutality of poaching. A true hero for rhinos everywhere 👏 #whiterhinoconservation #worldrhinoday23 #thegreatprojects
