Did a tour yesterday for the Leamington History Group which you can book via Eventbrite if you want to come along to the next one. I do the Historic Leamington Spa walking tour on the third Tuesday and Friday of each month and I’m really interested in talking about Leamington’s history and the people who shaped both its past and its future. It was nice that the Vicar of All Saints Church came out to say hello to my group of 14 people! Even the weather cooperated for once!

Out and about learning more about the street art scene with Tim aka Lord Numb and owner of Brink Gallery in Leamington Spa who has created and curated a whole area of street art as part of Creative Leamington. The Leamington History Group will be offering some street art tours during this summer. Look out for them and make sure you take part, there’s some great stuff out there. I will be one of the guides, come walk with me!

My free tour of Royal Leamington Spa on this very rainy day resulted in a wonderful piece of gossip which I am sharing with you. When the Royal Pump Rooms closed in 1989 and before it reopened as a cultural complex in 1999, Mick Jagger used the empty men’s swimming pool (or swimming hall as it was known) to film a music video ‘Sweet Thing.’ The pool was transformed to become today’s Leamington Library but the glass pool roof remains as a “sweet” reminder of days past.

Every third Friday of the month through the summer I give a free tour of Leamington Spa for the Leamington History Group. It leaves at 10:30 from inside the Leamington Visitor Centre located at the Pump Rooms and is a romp through history sprinkled with tales of some the characters who left their mark on our beautiful spa town. Todays tour was great fun, why not join me in August?

This year has been a big one for Historic Warwick Walks. A record number of visitors taking my tours and a few locals too. So, I would like to wish all my friends, past tour takers, tour takers to be, and FaceBook follows all the very best for the coming festive season and safe and happy travels in 2023.

Probably should have said that Trip Advisor gave me an award. Rather nice. With everyone on “staycations” tours of Historic Warwick and Royal Leamington Spa are popular. Nice to meet people from all over the British Isles who are exploring their own country this year.

John Cundall (1830-1889) was a Leamington boy made good. An architect of note for 25 years in Leamington, he is best known for designing the “new”Town Hall. A wonderful flight of gothic fantasy which opened in 1884 and was the second and much grander Town Hall for the town. Cundall also designed the Hitchman Memorial Fountain and the Edward Willes memorial in Jephson Gardens, plus a large number of churches, bridges and other buildings many of which still stand today. In the town of Warwick, Cundall designed the main building of Warwick School which opened in 1879, no 5 High Street, most recently a branch of Barclays Bank, and a novel and interesting religious building on a wedge of land at the bottom of Gerrard Street. Learn more about Leamington and Warwick on my historic walking tours.

In 1797 an Act passed by the English Parliament declared that a tax would be collected on every clock in the realm. As a result, many private clock owners either hid or got rid of their clocks. But how to tell the time? Taverns and pubs became the preferred location with clocks known as Tavern Clocks being hung in every pub and tavern throughout the British Isles. Landlords were happy to pay the tax as people coming to see what time it was would of course linger for a drink. See a tavern clock on my Historic Warwick Walk.

Soft opening of my walking tours of Historic Warwick and Historic Royal Leamington Spa. First tour yesterday and lovely to be able to guide again. Here’s a little taste of my Leamington tour. This building used to be a Catholic Church. Charles Louis Napoleon Bonaparte, who became Napoleon III lived in Royal Leamington Spa in 1838/39 and worshipped here while in exile from France. The church, built in 1828 was financed by Major Patrick Bisshopp who served as a Commander at the Battle of Waterloo. It was the first modern Catholic Church in Leamington.
