Here are a few photos from recent jobs we've been working on at Welltherm Drilling. On one project, we drilled through some chalk and flints. We successfully grouted 20 meters of 14” casing and then drilled to the required depth of 120 meters at 12 1/4”. We installed airlifting equipment to 120 meters and airlifted the well clean, preparing it for geophysical testing. Once the testing was complete, we installed the plastic casing to the full depth.

On another job, located in Wales, the team and equipment were put to the test! However, the reliability of Welltherm's drilling equipment and the unstoppable performance of the Massenza Drilling Rigs MI15 made the task manageable. We installed 20” and 16” casings, drilled to 20 meters, grouted in a 14” casing, and then removed the 20” and 16” casings. After, we then drilled out to a depth of 100 meters.

A major milestone has been reached in the UKRI Ground Source Heat Pump project! Drilling has been completed, achieving a maximum depth of 238.5 meters. The core samples will now be analysed so that the British Geological Survey can characterise the geology profile of their heat pump borehole array.

Check out this solid Gypsum core we recently drilled.

Gypsum is a soft sulphate mineral. It is often used as a fertiliser and is the main constituent in plaster.

We boxed up this core for research purposes as part of a project in partnership with the British Geological Survey.

The new Mi15 is in action!
Our new Massenza Drilling Rigs rig is currently coring at a site in Nottingham.

The site will have 28 boreholes drilled at a depth of 240m, in preparation for heat pump installations.

The team have been busy drilling a total of 100 holes at a depth of 190 meters across a site in Leeds ready for a retrofit heating system.

The -7°C temperature has caused its problems 🥶, including the drilling fluid freezing, but we’ve worked through the cold in order to bring heat to the surrounding homes.

We've drilled a 150m test hole on a site at Darlington in preparation for a Thermal Response Test.

The test ascertains the thermal conductivity of the ground, thermal diffusivity, bulk thermal capacity and temperature profile of the borehole.

This information will be used to refine the borehole array design.

Our team has been doing a pump test of a Open Loop Water Well on behalf of the Environment Agency License.

The system delivers 52,500 litres per hour. That is the equivalent of filling a kettle 35,000 times every hour, so it’s important to keep it working as it should! 💦

Whilst most people were sun bathing during the heatwave ☀️ in August we were drilling in Durham, very local to our base.

Overall we drilled 4 boreholes to a total depth of 424m. 👷‍♂️

Due to previous mining work that had been conducted historically in the local area the job took longer than anticipated to obtain the total depth required. ⛏

To ensure we stayed on schedule with the client’s programme, we brought an additional drilling rig on site with two 30 tonne tankers of water to facilitate continuous drilling. 💧

The team did a great job!

Recently we have been at Manchester Metropolitan University working with Bowmer & Kirkland towards creating the new department for the Faculty of Science and Engineering.

We were drilling ready for an Open Loop GSHP system and were using the 18” cable tool setting the top casing, for the rotary drilling crew to follow.

The Sand Guzzler is key to collect drilling fluid and cuttings. These are then sent to the re-cycling shaker which separates them apart for the drilling fluid to be pumped back for further drilling.
