WELLS NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN REFERENDUM - copies at the Library

Please remember that on the 4th July, not only will you be voting for your local MP, you will have the chance to vote for the Neighbourhood Plan which is a planning document that includes policies regarding principle residence occupancy for new build market housing, affordable rented housing for local people and a set of comprehensive building design codes. Once passed the planning authority has to consider the policies when deciding planning applications for Wells.

If you want more information there are copies of the plan available to view at Wells Library, the Town Council Office and the Community Hub at the Community Hospital.

You can also access all the information at:

We all need to be acutely aware of this information about the tides and sandbars in Wells and the surrounding area.
Make sure you know when high tide is and
ALWAYS return to the shore at least FOUR HOURS before high tide.

Sandbars and tidal cut off in Wells and the surrounding area.

So far this year Wells volunteer lifeboat crews rescued 28 people!
24 of those were cut off by the tide.

🏖️Sandbars: why they can be dangerous

⏳On Wells Beach the drains between them can be deep, ~2 metres and the ground at the bottom uneven.
From four hours before Wells Bar high tide time, the drains (channels) start to fill, forming islands
The water is cold and flows very quickly, making wading through dangerous
There is a risk of cold water shock, hypothermia and drowning

⌛️What to do if you get cut off by the tide on a sand bar

It's best if you're appropriately dressed for the weather (it can get cold very quickly, especially when wet) and have a charged mobile phone in a water proof pouch around your neck
Call 999 and ask for Coastguard
If you have What3words, use it to give your precise location, so help can get to you quickly
Stay calm and dry as long as possible

🌊How to easily avoid being cut off by the tide.

At least four hours before Wells Bar high tide, get back to the main part of the beach, dry sand/land

Wise words about ground nesting birds.

Wise words about ground nesting birds.

All the hard work by our rangers and shorebird volunteers really starts to feel like it’s paying off when we go from counting eggs to counting chicks – like these oystercatcher chicks on Blakeney Point.

📷 Callum Peel

⚠️This picture was taken by an experienced, professional ranger. Ground nesting birds are some of the most threatened bird species in the UK. If you come across a nest, please do not approach it.
