It is a prime example of the decorated style, displaying elaborate designs and carvings.

It is known for preserving the Cathedral’s oldest stained glass, dating back to around 1290, found in the windows’ traceries above the steps.

Initially built as a meeting venue for prebendaries or canons to discuss Cathedral affairs or hold legal discussions, the Chapter House includes more than forty seats arranged along the outer walls.

Wells High Street 🛍️

Home to many great cafes, pubs, restaurants, charity shops, and independent stores, there’s something for everyone to enjoy on Wells High Street.

Water trickles down gutters at the side of the paths along the High Street, running from the Well Pools, which give the city its name. Visitors can also enjoy the stunning views of the Cathedral while walking up towards the Market Place.

And don’t forget to explore the side streets branching off the High Street, as there are plenty more shops to discover!

A wonderful photo of the City of Wells Almshouses from !

Within Wells, there are five almshouse buildings that offer 33 homes for older people who need housing.

The oldest almshouse dates back to the 15th century, thanks to a gift from Nicholas Bubwith, the former Bishop of Bath and Wells and Treasurer to King Henry IV. Bubwith’s Almshouse is next to St Cuthbert’s Churchyard and features a chapel and a Guild room.

Have you been to see the Almshouses?

Simply magical 🌕

An absolutely stunning photo from Mike Jefferies of Glastonbury Tor to mark the Buck Moon. The photo was taken from a few miles away and cropped in to get this breathtaking perspective of the moon.

Glastonbury is just over 5 miles from Wells, and the Tor is an enjoyable (but steep) walk from the town centre.

It’s the perfect place to visit if you’re staying in Wells and you’re into history, walking, stunning views or photography!

Brown's Gatehouse, built around 1451 by Bishop Thomas Beckington (also spelt Beckyngton), provides an entrance to the Cathedral Precincts from Sadler Street.

The gatehouse is named after Richard Brown, a shoemaker who was the neighbouring tenant in 1553.

And did you know, in the 19th century, it was known as The Dean's Eye?
