Has it really been May since we lasted posted 😯 WESU took a short recess for its members to complete GCSE exams and we are pleased to report they all passed every one taken. congratulations!
We reconvened for the Autumn term with the hike we were forced to cancel in March due to poor weather. We were joined by Rowan from Welshpool scouts who is due to join us in November. The hike was a tough one with an overnight hammock camp in Guilsfield then a full day of orienteering and hiking on the Saturday. Poor Rown’s feet were suffering and highlighted the need for good sturdy fitting boots. All made it back safe and sound but totally exhausted as the weather was boiling. No photos unfortunately as we forgot.
We missed Opcom this year due to A Level commitments and excessive essays requiring completion. We will return for next year with a vengeance.
October has seen us programme planning and a night of raft building over at Crowther Hall with Guilsfield Cubs, that was such a fun night but we need to sack our photographer as again he forgot to take photos.
We have begun work towards updating our first aid skills with a night of practical held last week.
In amongst all this two explorers have been awarded their chief scout platinum award which we congratulate Explorer Joe and Explorer Jon for. The platinum award is a measure of dedicated hard work and commitment within scouting. Holders must have gained their DofE Bronze and must also complete two activities chosen from the international, communities and values list which they did with Welshpool Beavers section.

WESU undertook a nighthike with full DofE kit weight in rucksacks to assess fitness, navigation and endurance skills last Monday. Sadly we didn’t take any photos as was too busy to stop enroute, but can report everyone made the end checkpoint on time succesfully. Had we took any photos you may have seen a sight like the indicative photo below 😀

WESU will now be taking a break from meetings during this month of May as our members undertake vital GCSE exams. We wish you all success in your revision and exams. We will reconvene meetings after last GCSEs June 8th.

Well done to explorer William on completing your 10 hour community challenge module for his Welsh Baccalaureate GCSE. William chose to run an international evening of scouting in Denmark followed by an overnight space camp for the Welshpool Beavers. Those attending have earned their space badge to wear on their uniforms. Well done William for choosing to enhance skills and knowledge for the Welshpool beavers.

All four of our explorers are busy finalising their 10hour activity sessions for their Welsh Baccalaureate GCSE. All chose to plan and organise events for scouting at Welshpool. Explorers Joe Jon and Emily have worked together and planned a fun day at Broneirion for 33 beavers cubs and scouts, and Explorer William is planning and leading a space themed overnight camp in March with the view for beavers to achieve their space activity badge. The Beavers, Cubs and Scouts sections here at Welshpool have been exceptionally accommodating to allow our explorers to fulfil the community challenge module for Welsh Bacc. We wish them all well with this challenging aspect of the Welsh Baccalaureate qualification.

Last night the unit was very pleased to present their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Expedition presentation to the Welshpool Cubs, Scouts, parents and distinguished guests of Bob Head, chairman of 1st Clive’s own scout committee and Shane Squibb, Secretary. We would formally like to thank the cubs for staying late, and the scouts for arriving early to watch our presentation and we hope we inspired some of you to join explorers when your time comes.

Welshpool Esu spent the weekend braving sub zero temperatures at Yr Hafod in Snowdonia. Getting there Friday night proved difficult with the weather closing in and snow and ice on the roads. This was to be a weekend with WESU, Welshpool scouts, Mach Scouts and Mach Explorers. Unfortunately the Welshpool scout members were forced to turn back as the vehicle they were travelling in found the road conditions too tricky. WESU pressed on , and arrived at Yr Hafod at 11.45pm after setting out at 6.30pm from the COWSHACC. We were so pleased to be meet by Mach at the gates to help unload the food and kit. Saturday saw us hiking out as one big group to the lake where we all had a snowball fight at the lunch spot. Top marks to explorer Jon for landing a snowball from some distance straight into Explorer Williams lunchbag. The hike was an excellent chance to venture out into tricky terrain and everyone did a great job and managed the hike well. After hiking we all set to preparing Xmas dinner and everyone learnt some great skills prepping the huge meal. We played some team games in the evening and watched a movie. Sunday morning saw the weather turn for the worse so we curtailed the planned morning hike down to Bettws y Coed and left early for home. Farrell did an amazing job driving us in the snow for which we are very grateful. Same time next year guys, where hopefully Welshpool scouts will be able to join us.

Great meeting tonight prepping and checking kit for our weekend away mountain training in Snowdonia. Looking forward to networking with Machynlleth explorers and scouts. We could even be getting a dusting of snow to boot. Be interesting to see which is tougher.....the training or catching up on the two days of GCSE revision that some WESU members are seemingly pleased to be missing........😂

The unit has just completed its first ever Bronze DofE qualifying expedition on The Llangollen Canal. We are cold, wet and tired but thoroughly pleased after enduring all that storm Brian could throw at us. Will report back with some photos and a good recount of the adventure once we have caught up on some sleep. Huge congratulations to explorers Emily, William, Jon and Joe.

Today was great fun at the annual Operation Commando Event which was held this year in Dyfnant Forest. For those not familiar with this event , scout teams (aged 10 to 14) from across the county have to navigate to given checkpoints in the forest unassisted by their leaders, whilst teams of explorers (aged 14 to 18) are sent in to hunt them down all day. Despite pleas from the Welshpool scouts team it seems that the Welshpool explorers were relentless in their duties and still held them hostage for their token. Let’s hope they forgive us before young leaders night next week. 😁 weather was pretty abysmal all day long, but it didn’t dampen our spirits. We captured 13 scout teams throughout our day.

The unit are back working hard towards our qualifying DofE Bronze Expedition which will take place on The Llangollen Canal in October. We have sessions planned ahead on canal safety and tying specialist knots to moor the boats. All explorers are now in their young leader roles working with the beavers and cubs section at Welshpool. Life at WESU continues to be busy, just how we like it. ⚜️

We survived. That's the tale we will tell. It transpired that The Montgomery Canal is more akin to a wild mangrove in parts and we could have done with more than just human muscle power to get us through. Sadly we didn't pack the motorised w**d cutting machine boat. Must add that to the next DofE kit list. 😂 day one went very well despite heavy rain and the looming threat of thunder and lightning. Arrived at camp so tired and wet but pushed on to make our hammock camp a home from home. Slight error on day two setting off 30 mins too early ( oops, maps were so wet , hardly could read them) but we soon hooked up with the supervisors at the checkpoints. And then the theme of hooking up carried on as we hooked up with impassable canal w**d. First section put us 45 mins behind, and we were forced to abandon canoes and resort to the old fashioned methods not seen in use since victorian ages of hauling your canoes with ropes and long poles to get through to clear passage the other end.. where's the Shire horses when you need one ! just when you think you cracked it you find this was the way it would be for the next 3 miles or so. No water to be seen. Just w**ds.....Did well to arrive at end point just a meer 2.5hours behind original scheduled time. Thank goodness it was just our practice. Have never felt so exhausted but exhilarated in our lives. Team WESU rock!

We are home after our DofE expedition. Too tired to even unpack! Will find some energy tomorrow evening to post news of our adventure. It's been a blast, but boy did we get wet in the rain and don't even mention the words canal w**ds to us. Night all 😴

Seems an age since we posted updates but we have been busy prepping towards the units first ever DofE Bronze Expedition. Just 9 days to go ! watch this space for news and photos on our practice expedition by canoe on The Montgomery Canal. We've also been preparing for our qualifying expedition which is set for The Llangollen Canal in October. We have plans for mountain training in December and will be attending the annual Operation Commando event on 30th Sept too. If you feel inspired to join us on our busy programme, and you are aged 14 to 18 get in touch!

WESU have been busy getting some vital time on the water under their belts in preparation for their upcoming bronze DofE canoe expedition. Sadly there are no photos of last Fridays water session of life saving each other from the water into the boats but they all had a great time and got very very wet.......
Today's session of 3 hrs was designed to experience stamina and teamwork.
Everyone has earned time on the water staged activity badges and learned that swans are very protective birds who don't particularly like canoes too much !! Big thank you to Farrell (GSL) and Matthew (explorer leader)for today's session organised at short notice.
