Another wonderful 8 day tour with my dear ladies from Virginia, Debbie and Sherry. We lost the first day, due to their flight being postponed, but we sure made the most of the remaining 8 day, incl:
A return to their favourite castle of Dunnottar, fish and chips on the beach in Stonehaven, followed by a great market morning, with the great people of that town.
Urquhart Castie on Loch Ness, a day on the Ardnamurchan peninsular, out to the lighthouse, at the must westerly point of the British Isles, and a visit to
Mingary Castle, where you can stay and eat royally.
A return visit to the so special Glenfinnan and a great visit to the West Highland Museum in Fort William, who had a collection of Jacobite portraits on loan from Poland.
Then on to Glencoe and Oban incl the great castles of Kilchurn and Dunstaffnage.
CALMAC carried us across to Mull and Iona, with a superb visit to Maclean Duart Castle and the Abbey.
Back to the mainland and to Inveraray where they were shooting a film.
Pictish stones down at Kilmodan on the Cowal Peninsular, and return visits to raging Falls of Dochart at Killin and Balquidder.
Our final day took us to the Innerpeffray Library, the oldest lending library in Scotland, and the adjoining Kirk, which is the mausoleum for the old ancient Drummond family - the old Dukes of Perth. The library is quite magnificent, with some of the most amazing books and maps you could see anywhere.
The imposing Huntingtower Castle and the favoured town of Falkand, finished the tour.

A marvellous day on the water from Dunoon, up to the head of Loch Long at Arrochar.
Our voyage was on the oldest paddle steamer in the world, built in 1947, to replace the former old lady, lost at Dunkirk in 1940.
What a day in lovely weather.
We did this ad a surprise early birthday present for my brother Peter.

Pictures as ever speak louder than words, even though it is said the Gaelic language was the language of the Garden of Eden.

Coming back from our great visit to Hermitage Castle in the heart of the Borders in Liddesdale, we came back home via the Ettrick Valley and the lovely wee village of Ettrickbridge..
Just north of here is the old 15th century Kirkhope Tower, once in the hands of the great Border family the Scotts.
I looked at buying this wonderful old tower quite some many years ago, but I was not brave enough to do it........ I wonder what if........ ??!!
You can just see the tower on the left escarpment at the end of the track.
What a wonderful emotive home it would surely have been, living in the midst of such history - but could you imagine how impractical it would surely have been.....
Ah well...

A long awaited visit to one of Scotland’s most bloody of castles.
Right in the middle of Liddesdale in the very heart of the Border Country, or to what was called the “ Debatable Land.” The Border country is made up of strong clannish Border families, better known as the Border Reivers.Raids were often made down into England, and Hermitage Castle was often in the middle of all the feuding.
It was the Norman De Soulis family who first built here, and soon taken over by the Cumbrian Dacre family who built a stone one.
Thereafter it was mainly controlled by the powerful Black Douglas family or else the tough charismatic Elliott family “ who da” meddle wi me “ as declared by wee Jock Elliott.
Mary Queen of Scots made her famous horse journey from Jedburgh and back in a day, in order to visit Darnley, the Lord Bothwell, then in control of Hermitage, but with some competition from the Elliots, who indeed had wounded him.
The castle still looms up in the middle of the valley, and is very haunted by one of the DeSoulis family who had been burnt for witchcraft, and they say by Mary Queen of Scots herself.
No one is advised to sleep here the night, unless a direct descendant of a Border Reiver.
