Such a stunning photo of the aurora over Portland last night! Did you see them? Share your photos, we’d love to see! 👇🏼

I must admit I'm a little lost for words after last night. Though we've had spates of Aurora activity over the past year, last night was another level. Using an app called Glendale for reference - a red alert means Aurora is likely in dark places all over the UK, this red alert kicks in at a value of -700 nT (don't worry too much what this means, just any value -700 or lower is strong Aurora). At peak levels, last night at 23:35 the value dropped to -4,282nt!! That's literally insane.

I could see Aurora with my naked eye in the middle of a built up area on the South coast of Britain. Something I never in a million years thought would be possible.

I stood in awe watching the pillars dance across the sky, it really took my breath away and I was almost in tears at one point.

You'll likely see floods of images from all over the UK today, and to think that so many photographers (and non photographers alike) have witnessed this rare phenomenon is incredible.

If you missed out, don't worry, the sub storm is STILL active. Values right now are -2600nT (remember it only needs to be -700) and it's predicted to last until just after dark so you might get another chance tonight.

Anyway, enough waffle. Here's my contribution to the pot, where I was lucky enough to grab a shooting star in the frame at Portland Bill.

Phil Jacobs, spotted the 16ins long fossilised snout of the 150 million year old Pliosaur during a beach walk at Kimmeridge Bay back in April 2022.
