The story of this vessel can be found in a book called "Weymouth at War" by the original owner, Ron Hill.
We are working with Coastline Cruises and Weymouth Heritage Centre to bring that story to life with guided tours on the boat around the harbour, including the D-Day embarkation story

Always great to see her in harbour, many walk past her but may not know the history: My Girl, a Weymouth pleasure vessel, was requisitioned by the army for war service in 1939 and throughout the Second World War with her skipper Ron Hill at the helm, she ferried troops from the Royal Artillery Regiment to and from the Breakwater Forts guarding Portland Harbour and the naval base.

This was a prime target for enemy bombing raids.

The vessel also carried shells for the big guns of the forts, paraffin for the searchlights, stores, mail, and the welcome ENSA Concert Parties to entertain the troops.

My Girl played her part in 1944 in the build up to D-Day and beyond, as the harbours of Weymouth and Portland witnessed the departure of half a million American troops bound for France to participate in the liberation of Europe.

Great bit of Viking history from HistoricUK

in 1014, Sweyn Forkbeard, the first Viking King of England, died - just five weeks into his reign.

Already King of Denmark and Norway, Sweyn spent years raiding England before finally seizing the throne from Æthelred the Unready on Christmas Day 1013.

Forced into exile, Æthelred fled to Normandy while Sweyn ruled over a newly forged North Sea empire. But his reign was short-lived. On the 3rd February 1014, he died suddenly - some say after falling from his horse, others whisper of an assassination.

His death threw England into chaos. Æthelred returned from hiding to reclaim the throne, but Sweyn’s son, C**t, wasn’t about to let it go without a fight… and we all know how that turned out!

A great post about the most famous landmark in London, rebuilt after the Great Fire of London using Portland Stone, & designed by one of the town's MP's - Sir Christopher Wren.

in 1697, the rebuilt St Paul’s Cathedral was consecrated. Designed by Sir Christopher Wren, it replaced the medieval cathedral destroyed during the Great Fire of London in 1666.

Wren’s design broke from Gothic tradition, introducing a striking Baroque style and the now-famous dome, one of the largest in the world. The reconstruction took over 30 years, with Wren himself overseeing much of the work.

St Paul’s quickly became a landmark of London, symbolising the city’s recovery from one of its greatest disasters.
