In December we made our usual trip to Seashell Cottage to set up the tree and decorations and do our Christmas shopping. We always seem to find perfect gifts in the local independent shops in Whitby. Shopping here is so enjoyable with the harbour views and old streets as well as the variety of eateries and pubs and all without the need to drive anywhere. Love it!

Fancy a coffee or a meal on the barque Endeavour minutes from lovely Seashell Cottage? New this year is the dog friendly restaurant on board. From its top deck, are views from the working harbour to the piers in the distance. We have only 3 sets of summer dates left, 5th for 3 nights, 24th for 8 nights in June & 7th for 3 nights August. The middle of May ‘23 we enjoyed drinks at the Cafe Montmartre, Market Square in Whitby sitting outside in the sun while I sketched the view. Love their cocktails and their hot and spicy chai on colder days. After the sea air and comfy bed gave the best nights sleep there is the pleasure of waking up to this early morning view from the little window beside the bed in Seashell Cottage. “I hate water” “No.Don’t make me go out in the rain” “No, don’t make me go in the bath” “No, I hate water”…….”WOW! The sea. I love it!!!”
So, it turns out Ted loves the sea. It’s a pity he doesn’t like bath water as much…but….
We go out of Seashell Cottage and turn left down Flowergate to the bridge and he chooses his beach, His favourite is Tate Hill which is open to dogs all year round. The sun is on Tate Hill Pier and beach in the afternoons, a good time to enjoy a coffee there & a game on the beach before heading back to Seashell Cottage and a cosy evening.

All it took was a warm dry day in May ‘23 to relax and chill out on the long, west beach and enjoy time away from pressures to sketch the stunning surroundings. West pier.

The beautiful seaside blue fitted kitchen in Seashell Cottage. It gives so much more worktop area and feeling of space. Foss Falls, a wonderful spot for a walk and lunch just a short distance out of Whitby. Beautiful, wild and peaceful. The sound of rushing water as you eat the excellent refreshments at the top of the falls cleanses the soul. The walks through the woodland and over streams is refreshingly natural and beautiful. Love the fresh look of the sustainably sourced blue and white linen on the twin beds in the second bedroom. The bedside lamp is a winner with me too. In the heart of old Whitby but in a quiet spot, Seashell Cottage, with its 2 comfortable bedrooms is a great spot for up to 4 people to stay for a winter break with great walks nearby and beautiful and historic landmarks to investigate. Back in this clean and comfortable cottage enjoy a cosy evening by the real flame fire. The large, practical, porch is perfect for storing your outdoor clothes and the private outside space means bringing along your canine pal is an easy decision. With so many excellent pubs and restaurants you are spoiled for choice while the small and varied shops down the old streets are a delight, as is the range of local artisan food and drink available to eat on the spot or take home.
For those looking for something different to start of December there is the increasingly famous “Krampus Run” that passes by only a few minutes walk from the cottage. Join in the daytime activities then watch the child catchers, marvel at the amazing costumes and follow the drums and bells to the climax of the walk.
