The middle of May ‘23 we enjoyed drinks at the Cafe Montmartre, Market Square in Whitby sitting outside in the sun while I sketched the view. Love their cocktails and their hot and spicy chai on colder days. After the sea air and comfy bed gave the best nights sleep there is the pleasure of waking up to this early morning view from the little window beside the bed in Seashell Cottage. “I hate water” “No.Don’t make me go out in the rain” “No, don’t make me go in the bath” “No, I hate water”…….”WOW! The sea. I love it!!!”
So, it turns out Ted loves the sea. It’s a pity he doesn’t like bath water as much…but….
We go out of Seashell Cottage and turn left down Flowergate to the bridge and he chooses his beach, His favourite is Tate Hill which is open to dogs all year round. The sun is on Tate Hill Pier and beach in the afternoons, a good time to enjoy a coffee there & a game on the beach before heading back to Seashell Cottage and a cosy evening.

All it took was a warm dry day in May ‘23 to relax and chill out on the long, west beach and enjoy time away from pressures to sketch the stunning surroundings. West pier.

Foss Falls, a wonderful spot for a walk and lunch just a short distance out of Whitby. Beautiful, wild and peaceful. The sound of rushing water as you eat the excellent refreshments at the top of the falls cleanses the soul. The walks through the woodland and over streams is refreshingly natural and beautiful. Love the fresh look of the sustainably sourced blue and white linen on the twin beds in the second bedroom. The bedside lamp is a winner with me too. In the heart of old Whitby but in a quiet spot, Seashell Cottage, with its 2 comfortable bedrooms is a great spot for up to 4 people to stay for a winter break with great walks nearby and beautiful and historic landmarks to investigate. Back in this clean and comfortable cottage enjoy a cosy evening by the real flame fire. The large, practical, porch is perfect for storing your outdoor clothes and the private outside space means bringing along your canine pal is an easy decision. With so many excellent pubs and restaurants you are spoiled for choice while the small and varied shops down the old streets are a delight, as is the range of local artisan food and drink available to eat on the spot or take home.
For those looking for something different to start of December there is the increasingly famous “Krampus Run” that passes by only a few minutes walk from the cottage. Join in the daytime activities then watch the child catchers, marvel at the amazing costumes and follow the drums and bells to the climax of the walk.

A different and fun start to the Christmas season.

The Whitby Krampus Run is an annual event held in Whitby, England, that brings together a unique blend of folklore, creativity, and festive spirit. Inspired by the traditional Krampus parades in Europe, the Whitby Krampus Run features participants dressed as Krampus, a mythical creature known in Alpine folklore as the companion of St. Nicholas.

During the event, the streets of Whitby come alive with a spectacular procession of terrifying yet captivating Krampus costumes. Participants don intricately designed masks, wild costumes, and impressive horns, creating a chilling and mesmerizing atmosphere. The Whitby Krampus Run celebrates the darker side of the holiday season, embracing the folklore and mythology that surround the Krampus figure.

Spectators and participants alike can expect to be immersed in an otherworldly experience as they witness the sight of Krampus figures marching through the town. The event often includes performances, music, and interactive elements, allowing attendees to engage with the Krampus lore firsthand.

The Whitby Krampus Run not only showcases the creativity and artistic expression of its participants but also serves as a reminder of the diverse cultural traditions that exist around the world. With busy times coming up we have released 2 of the weeks we keep for ourselves. We have released the first week of December (Krampus run week) and the first week of September. This is always a favourite week of ours as there are not the big crowds of the summer holidays but the weather is often lovely. A great time of year to explore Whitby and the area and to enjoy a drink on the Abbey headland at the brewery by the Abbey or my favourites, sketching or enjoying a good book and a coffee on Tate Hill Pier that gets the afternoon and early evening sun. Often followed by the absolute best Bramble Gin cocktail at Cafe Montmatre on Church street on the way home.
Teddy loves being there for the goodies he buys at the “The Fuzzy Dog Bakery” on Flowergate.

Krampus anybody? Whitby introduced the original Krampus event in the country based on local myths and Bavarian folklore and it was so successful it has now become an annual event in Whitby’s calendar for the first weekend of December. Like nothing you have seen before it has taken Whitby to another level of Gothic and heralds in the winter season in a suitably wierd and different way.
We love the Krampus and the opportunity to buy Christmas gifts in the lovely original shops and some superb local food and drink for the season.
We keep the Krampus week booked for us but this year is a busy one for us and we have decided to free up a couple of weeks we keep for us including the first week in December for someone else to enjoy.

After several weeks blocked from bookings the new kitchen at Seashell Cottage is completed and the cottage is prepared ready to welcome guests for Christmas in Whitby.

All summer and Autumn bookings are now booked up but with a large porch for your winter coats and boots, controllable CH, a really cosy to sit by real flame gas fire and double glazed it is a cosy place to settle into after some late autumn or winter walks. With such a fantastic choice of restaurants, pubs and coffee shops to enjoy in Whitby there is always something to do and somewhere to go in Whitby. The autumn colours through the Esk valley are stunning and a walk to Foss Falls only a 10 minute drive out of Whitby is a wonderful contrast to the coast. For coastal walks you could try the less walked beach below the abbey headland at low tide for fabulous views that change with the light and weather. In town look round the wonderful choice of shops to pick up some interesting Christmas gifts. Artisan food and drink including the much recommended Whitby Gin in its gorgeous Whitby inspired moulded glass bottles or enjoy the walk and views to Whitby Brewery for beer from the brewery next door to the abbey. For coffee officianados there are all the Bay Town Coffees that are second to none. You could also get your kippers to take home from ‘Fortunes’ in Henrietta Street, one of few original smoke houses left round our coast.

Seashell Cottage is a bright and cosy, self-catering, 2 bedroom cottage in the heart of the old harbour town of Whitby in a peaceful spot close to all shops and amenities and only minutes from the beach. This old fisherman’s cottage is well equipped and has been largely revamped in the last year to have a fresh, subtle seaside theme. It has the added benefits of an attractive and private, gated yard and a view across the harbour entrance and piers, out to sea and to the abbey headland from the double bedroom. Surprisingly spacious it makes a comfortable base from which to enjoy Whitby and the surrounding area.
